Is there any way the system transfer downgrade method could work without having to shell out four dollars for a NNID that I'll never use again? Is there any way to do this for free?

You don't need a NNID to buy the game and no you need to actually buy the game. You can't sheel out money for a $5 game? You can't get it for free.
