Gaming DS Lite Power light not working, what could it be?

Hello, my cousin has a DS Lite, and I noticed that his power light is not turning on. This is the light that turns green when charged and then red when the battery is low. The DS powers on fine. Any ideas on what this could be and why, and what I can try to do to fix it?
