If you take out the cartridge when a commercial game is running the program freezes, however if you do tat to a homebrew (which of course isn't streaming data atm) then you can happily keep playing/using the app. This means that the freezing is probably just something built in the official devkits and is called when the cartridge is taken out.
No.

The difference is that homebrew applications are much, much smaller than commercial ROMs, so the whole thing gets loaded into memory upon boot. Most commercial games load new data quite frequently, and when the cart its attempting to load from isn't there, it obviously freezes.

Use common sense.
I mentioned it cannot be streaming data for it to work, but yeah it's most probably the main reason why it freezes. Also I see I've made a typo there

You can't make a 2 carts game.. a game cart doesn't work like a CD.
Sure you could, there just isn't any reason to. There are at least a few homebrew apps that let you remove the flashcart and insert a DS game cart to transfer the save file or dump the rom, so there's no reason they would be unable to let you swap carts.

Edit:QUOTE(CockroachMan @ May 6 2008, 06:36 AM) The save information of a game is kept on it's own cart, you can't transfer it to other carts unless you use something like a swaping GBA cart or something.. which would be stupid. On the PSX and other consoles, the Memory card is used for the that.
They could just store it in the DS's memory until the swap was complete. The current largest DS save is 512KB, and the DS has 4096KB of main RAM. Plenty of room for a save and some code that will wait for a new cart to be inserted.

I was amazed because never paid attention to ASH game size (ASH - Archaic Sealed Heat): 2048 Mbit, as Urza said. The biggest games I've seen so far were “only” 1024 Mbit. So I guess we should be a little more calm and wait how this big game will be announced...

You know there's also a game made by sunrise, that's 2048 Mbit (God, I hate saying Megabit.) It's a quiz about their company with thousands of questions. It's been out for a WHILE. I know this game is pretty useless, but I'm just throwing it in there because it's 2048 Mbit.

And Any ideas when ASH is getting translated? I don't want to play it right now, because I have no knowledge of Japanese whatsoever.

Nobody mentioned Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness? It's scheduled for July but it's pretty much going to be delayed again anyway. It was already delayed from June.

I'm wondering how the ARDS does it, it seems that it would have to hold all the code data when the ARDS chip is taken out, as the remaining data has to prepare for any game on the ds memory.

Edit DOuble repeating post. Whoops

Is that 2 cartridges for DQ9 a joke? I'm pretty sure it's never been said about the cartridges. And how would we flashcard users handle the thing?

why would they want to have 2 slot-1 cards? wouldn't they release a slot-2 card or something to reduce slowdowns

Oh crap, I saw English of the Dead on Kotaku some while ago. Supplement your English with added violence? Sounds like a good enough incentive, although silly in concept.

Also: EO2, FFTA2, Trauma Center. June is gonna be fucking awesome.
