Anyway am I right in saying this was the puzzle game with alot of hype surrounding it on gbatemp? I guess I will try this tonight, there has not been a decent puzzle game for me on the ds for awhile.
Yeah, there was a lot of hype about this being a Phoenix Wright-killer. It turns out it wasn't (at all), but it's quite good. I really liked the American version, but it had a few puzzles which were really annoying. That's the thing that, in the end, stopped me from getting this. Maybe I'll play the European version again, and if it's much better I'll buy it.

But eh... Really, try this! It's really fun to play, and it has some clever puzzles.

You lot are so funny with your 'ZOMG wtf is this??? I've been playing the ROM for years.' - you know some people actually buy these games from shops to support the games industry - so that you lot can keep downloading the Roms, just remember that
grog.gif

No, it's not you who enbale us to download those ROMs. It's because of the whole Releasegroups.
smile.gif

You're missing the point. If no one bought the original games from a shop, like me - there would be nothing for the release groups to release.

Oh, crap... I wanted to show this game to my little sister. She doesn't speak much English, so I was hoping the Spanish version would work properly

@4ppleseed: Please, leave the "pirates vs. legals" discussion in the EoF. We all know how this always ends.

On topic: Glad to see there was a re-dump of this excellent game. I'm curious to see what puzzles were messed with.

Hmm,, I'd really really like to play this, but can anyone hand me any reason why this ROM won't boot on my M3? The screen just goes black after it makes a savegame.. And its not the bad dump, its the repack! I hope somebody can help me, been dying to play this! :]

I'm a Layton hardcore fan, so I've been replaying the European version.
Halfway through, I can tell you that yes, there are some new puzzles here and there.
And also, Luke's voice has been rerecorded with a new voice actor (a worse one at that).

Now I'm waiting for a localization of part two!

Even with the repack the games gives me a white screen after loading. I'm using a supercard lite with firmware 1.84 and patchsoftware SC V2.68 sd pro . I tried all kind of settings but haven't found the right one yet. Maybe the firmware is out of date ? Anybody with the right settings (what to disable or enable and wich firmware to use ? And when upgrading the firmware is there a chance that my older favourite games no longer will work ?

i have an R4 SDHC, and this doesn't work properly on mine. Saving works, but when i try to load a savegame, it hangs with "Our story so far" (though the music is still playing in the background). Are there any fixes for this game? Any cheats that could sort this out?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
