I remember once posting on another forum (the one for the music tracker Waffles, R.I.P.), many years ago, "tell me I don't need to buy a NES".

And in the intervening time, I at least succeeded in not buying a NES.

Now, all these years later, after all the wisdom and life experience accrued in the meantime, I am in fact like "tell me I don't need to buy a Famicom".

Using an emulator can help make testing go faster, but if you want accurate sounding music, and to make sure it plays on the proper hardware, then aim for something like a Famicom which costs 30 bucks for a used unit alone and also a flashcart.

NES consoles are expensive, but you're getting a downgrade as you miss out the many features that the Famicom has to offer. We didn't get expanded audio, a disk system due to piracy, or the ability to use the built-in microphone to interact with stuff on-screen like in Zelda. I believe that the NES would've been a lot more successful if it wasn't for what the Famicom had which made it so unique.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a replacement PSU and RGB upgrade.
Thanks, but I'm thinking more classic composite-to-CRT vibes. The original Famicom still needs a composite mod but it looks pretty cheap and straightforward.

I'd been intending to stick to pirate multi carts, possibly a flash cart if I got really into it and wanted to play translations and new games, but I've also just seen how cheap a lot of games go for as bare carts from Japan, and having even a modest set of plastic rectangles lying around the console in an assortment of funky colours with weird Japanese labels would really add to the authentic experience.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought dual-disk FDS games couldn't be emulated yet? They're few in number, but still.

Firstly, I don't know. Secondly, do you mean emulated on a computer, or played on a real Famicom using a flash cart or real ram expansion and drive emulator?
I read something about combining the disks into one file, but idk what that works for.
I don't think the affected games are ones I want to play tbh.

So, latest research - Famicom light guns are hilariously expensive, but official NES zappers are cheap and plentiful and will work with the right adapter.
The grey zappers are quite rare and only orange is what most people are familiar with. It's possible to re-wire the pins from the NES zapper to use on the Famicom.
