Hacking Does softmod affect legit read speeds?

First of all, please keep the flames/wiitard/touch your self etc jokes aside please, it's a simple question:

My wii is softmodded with that awesome pack linked here (the 7 wads that you install). All is fine and ok bar the 3x pain in the bum read speeds for DVD-R

My question is, does softmodding also nerf retail read speeds that you run via the disc channel? ie do they read at 3x also?

Nope it doesn't affect legit disks, they still run at 6x.

I guess HOTDK just sucks at being stuttery (legit copy), I bought the official dvd lens cleaner and I'm sure it made things worse.

I wonder if my drive (release wii, pal 2006) is just dying.....

problem is I've opened the device (I thought I could mod it

, then gave up) so returning to ninty is a no no.

1\ anyone know if a flatmii loads at 6x or 3x and whether it makes house of the dead any better?
2\ if i get a premodded replacement DVD, will it just live ok with my softmod and run at 6x, or do I have to uninstall the softmod. Don't really care about homebrew tbh.

1\ it runs games (=retail/backup) at 6x speed, as any modchip. The funny thing about flatmii is that you don't even need a DVD for backups, it streams them from pc too

2\ hardmods don't affect softmods

Yes Flatmii is looking more and more tempting... I can put a laptop next to the wii.... and I can install it myself (I hope......)

I think my drive is starting to die tbh, it's taking way to long to load legit games that loaded quick before....

Any thoughts on the above drive?

I've heard that HOTDK has some stuttering here and there, so maybe it's not your drive.
From IGN review:

I dunno about that replace drive, but as I said Flatmii needs no drive at all and its solderless, so must be (more) easy to install it.
If you're good at making cSM, you can win one here (or any other modchip)
anyway, you'll be good with whatever you choose

I read that DVD cleaners do not work with the Wii.

Best to just just unscrew the case, get some rubbing alochol and some q-tips, and gently apply it onto the laser.

Hi there, we picked up Smash Brothers Brawl last night at a midnight releasing and were shocked to find that our Wii couldn't read the disc. We've got a smoker in the house and it's a sure bet there was plenty of dust in there, so it was a given the laser was likely too dusty to read the dual layered Smash Disc. Still, this was very disappointing and will result in quite a few Wii and Smash Brawl returns.

We've taken apart both of our GameCube's in the past to adjust the laser frequency dial so they would continue to read game discs, so we figured disassembling the Wii must be relatively similar. Unfortunately, the Wii uses a triwing screwdriver, which we weren't willing to wait to have shipped now that we had gone out and gotten Brawl early.

Fortunately, it appears that the "Husky 8-in-1 Precision Screwdriver" set appears to work if you apply a little force and set it correctly into the triwing screw slots. Use the smallest Phillips bit included in the set, as it seems to fit the best. The Husky bit did seem to start bending by the time were were finished with it, so just keep an eye on it.

Just remove the screws on the outer shell, carefully remove the panels until you can clearly see the disc-loader, and then apply a cotton ear swab and a dab of rubbing alcohol to the laser's lens (it'll look glassy and shiny, can't miss it). Use a different clean cotton ear swab to dry the lens, put the Wii's panels back together, and whalla, Brawl works again for however long you can keep your Wii dust-free.

The arrow is where you can access the Wii's Laser lens, the "X" is about where the lens are located.



Once we're done playing Brawl for a bit, I might post up complete photographic instructions, but I don't think that's terribly necessary. I would suggest however that you watch a video of a Wii being disassembled on YouTube before attempting anything, and again use caution and don't do anything obviously destructive.

No no won't go near the laser, I suck at stuff like that

also HOTD for me doesn't just "stutter", it sometimes practically stops for a half second or so, making me lose goregasm combos

Metroid Prime 3 (legit) stays stuck at doors, etc

I've ordered the replacement drive... let's see
