Do i ever? Yes, when i feel my message needs a facial expression of sorts beside it to make it clear what my intent is, as that way of communication gets lost here when purely texting. Gotta make it known that you're just goofing around and not being serious like when joking around with Tempers.

I am happy with emoticons where you make a face with text characters. I don't intentionally use emoji, but am not offended by them. What annoys me is characters being automatically converted into emoji so I can't type the sequence of characters for their intended purpose e.g. colon + open bracket being sad, or less-than-3 being a heart. Sometimes I did just mean less-than-3!

When I was a kid, it was all about colon-hyphen-right parenthesis, and the nose-less variation soon followed. You could give the face glasses with 8, a laugh with D as the mouth, or add > to represent irrational anger. Good times.

To answer the question, I usually don't use them.
