Hacking Do only the first two numbers count for the Firmware (Gateway)

for instance, will ANY firmware'd 3DS starting with "4.4" or "4.5" etc. work with Gateway? Do the "XXU" numbers matter? or...?

No it doesn't matter as long as it's 4-1 to 4.5

to be precise: the first three numbers matter (4.1.0 to 4.5.0), as those denote the system software aka firmware version. Ninty just hasn't used the third digit yet (and most likely never will) so we usually ignore it (thus we only ralk about 4.1 to 4.5).

The number after the dash denotes the eShop app/program version number which has no significance unless one wants to use it.

Finally the letter denotes the region.
