Hacking Do I need a custom system menu or the official one?

I've yet to upgrade to menu 4.0. I've also got various bits of homebrew that I want to install. Do I need a custom/hacked version of 4.0 or can I go ahead with a normal update? Can I also ask about running emus or ROMs from the SD card in 4.0? Installed WADs? Any probs?
