Simple "HELLO WORLD!" Shift-JIS text insert proof of concept. Nothing serious.

Game doesn't seem to support lowercase letters (or at least only supports a select few) during this screen.

Not really sure why "HELLO" didn't fully show - other than my tool not properly inserting text, but not entirely sure because game has unusual behavior.
 
hi there! i came across the code for this tool on github, and i just wanted thank you so much for creating this! i'm planning on creating a translation patch for despiria, and this seems like it'd be really helpful for getting me started.

that being said, this game has some quirks that i'll have to address, so i have a lot of work ahead of me. there's obviously the vertical text animations for instance, and judging from your script it seems like there are some text encoding issues to take care of. also it seems like i'll have to mess around with the font so that it can display english characters properly. since you've spent some time working with this game, have you encountered any other quirks in the code that i should know about before jumping in?

Any updates on this? The vibe of this game is amazing and I am fascinated by it. Played the intro with Google Translate on my phone and was kinda getting hooked, despite how cumbersome that was.

Would love love love to play this properly one day. Seems like a truly amazing hidden gem.
 
No real progress, no real updates, sorry.

Generally if I figure something out in one game and get stuck, I'll literally look at it for 10 minutes, be confused, and close it permanently until one random day I open it back up, and realize what's missing and figure it out.

Sadly, the latter never happens for any of my projects.

You guys are screwed unless someone tries to build on top of what I documented.

There is a reason why I documented whatever I did, and that's because it's relatively un-documented.

At least it was somewhat relatively easy to figure out some of the bytecode...

Your best bet(s) is to go on that specific Dreamcast forum (one that I won't name directly, because they allow direct links to "patched" ROMs) and ask over there. I haven't bothered making an account there because I see no point in doing so.
 
I think the first issue that should be addressed with DeSpiria is getting it to support VGA output. Then building a translation patch on top of that code. If anyone could figure that out, I think more people would be interested in supporting the project or even helping with it.
