This sound patch is also required for the homebrew CorsixTH, the Theme Hospital interpreter.

Thanks for the link!

This port looks outstanding. I confess, I didn't know Descent had even been ported to WiiWare, let alone redone and ported to homebrew. That video brought back amazing old memories.

I'm curious though, and forgive me if I'm necro-ing, but how limited are the controls, given that you're restricted to the WiiMote/Classic Controller/GC controller/etc? Any room for using the flare and all?

The Flare is the torch? It's assigned to the Classic Controller's "+" button if I remember.

With a Classic Controller all the commands are available. You just need to get used to the control first (which is quick, when reaching Level2 you will play fine already).
I didn't try all the other controllers, but I think CC is the one you should use.

I like playing without the credential/restricted moves when rotating Z axis, it's make movement more fluid. You can disabled it in the game settings.

I'm hoping someone can help me here - when I try and load the game my wiimotes disconnect and reconnect and I just get a blank screen. Then only thing I can do is hold down the power button for 5 seconds to reboot the wii.

I'm running the latest wii firmware, fully modded - I can run any other homebrew fine - (Quake, WiiMC etc).

Descent is sitting in apps/descent and I've copied in the .PIG and .HOG files which I got from the purchased version at GOG.com (Descent 1 + 2 pack). I haven't set up any music yet (midi or mp3), but I'm assuming the game should still play without any music.

Any ideas?

Hi, I'm very sorry to bump this relatively old topic, but I'm having the same problem here, and funny thing is, Descent was working fine on my Wii a few months ago, but now, I get a black screen and the intro music.
I had Descent on my 4 GB SD card before, then I updated my Wii to the latest mods ( according to mod-mii , my Wii is up to date on everything ) then just recently I reinstalled it on the SD card, and I can't play it anymore.
Note that first, I recopied the whole folder ( a backup I had on my PC ) complete with the HOG, PIG and old cfg files, and it didn't work, then I redownloaded Descent and performet a clean install, and still no luck.
Somebody mentioned that there might be a problem with the brightness settings, but if there is no cfg file yet, how to I go about to fix that ?
I hope somebody has a solution to this, I played descent a few month ago just fine and I got addicted to it, but never finished it, I really would like to play this again......;)

Just tried booting Descent using the latest postLoader and also got a black screen.
So i restarted the wii and used Homebrew Channel instead to run the game and it booted up just fine =)

Thanks for the tip, however that is exactly what I did the first time I got the black screen, restarted it from the homebrew channel, which unfortunately still gives me a black screen, however I can hear the music playing.
I tried pushing buttons both on the wiiremote and on the CC pro but nothing happened, I could only shot it down.
I even looked for the .cfg file on my old installation ( looking for the brightness settings ) , but all I got was a garbled text.

I'm really going nuts on this, it was playing just fine a few months ago, and now I really wanna play it !
Could it be that I updated some ios ( always following the latest modmii and systemcheck ) that made the game unplayable ? And if so what would I need to downgrade ?
Any help would be really appreciated !

It sometimes does that when the wii's network configuration has been modified by something other than the system menu. Try the lastest build.

Thanks a lot tueidj, I'm glad to see you still interested in this !
I actually solved the problem by installing Descent on a different SD card, then later I found out that the problem with the original SD card was the roland sound patch that I had installed in order to play the midi music ( for an authentic sound experience ).
It was working before though, so indeed there is something different going on with my Wii.

I know it's been asked before, but a port of descent 2 would be amazing on the wii....even without the music !!
I'm also playing descent maximum on the PSP and it's not so bad, I love the somohow easier difficulty and smaller maps !
But the way I set up the controls on my CCpro on the Wii is just too good to trade with anything else...
Thank you very much for the hard work again!

I started on Descent 2 and completed work for the two major additional features (CD audio support from .iso+.cue files and a video decoder for the cut-scenes) then kinda lost interest in finishing all the fiddly little bits, like getting all the controls sorted out and making sure all the menus work with joystick commands. I prefer the simplicity of the original game so the motivation to complete it just wasn't there. Plus the hosting company I was using for SVN disappeared without a trace, the code was safe because I keep multiple backups but I lost all the commit history and never bothered setting up a new repository for it.

BTW if you manage to get to the final level you really need to use the newest build, there was a bug in the original game that makes the final boss send network events (when new enemies are "gated" in) even in single player games. Which would normally be ignored, except it triggers the sanity check I added to detect if that ever happens...

It occurred to me today that since Descent 2 supports simultaneous rendering of different views, it would be perfect for the Wii U - the rear view could be constantly displayed on the control pad, as well as using it for the missile cam for guided missiles. So there's something to look forward to...

Well, thanks, I downloaded that immediately the other day, I'm a sucker for newest builds....
And I don't need to get to the last level to enjoy it, you fixed a very annoying bug for me, and that was the wide screen resolution output, where previously in widescreen mode a few top and bottom lines were cut off, making the system messages hard to read.
With the latest build there is not such a problem, the messages are displayed correctly.
Thanks a lot again, and we can only dream about homebrew on the Wii U, the possibility of having the rear view on the controller or even the whole game on the controller screen while laying on the couch would be awesome !

There seems to be some issues with the IPX multiplayer feature. Every time I host a game on the Wii and try to connect from Dosbox or GOG.com-launcher (running on OSX 10.6 or windows 7) the Wii freezes and a hard reset is required. Is there anyone else who can verify this and/or give me some pointers?

Best regards,
Pallee

PS. sorry for the bump

The error was that I was using version 1.12 of the wii port, found v. 1.10 on the net and it worked fine! (http://www.qj.net/wii/homebrew-games/wii-homebrew-descent-wii-v110.html)
Does anyone know if there is any other differences between the versions?
