Hacking Default firmware, reconfiguring the 7 icons on main menu?

Given an m3ds Real with the default firmware.
How do I reconfigure the 7 shortcut icons on the first screen?
Notably the one for media which opens up the built-in moonshell media player.
I went and downloaded the latest version of moonshell to find that... you run it as a .nds file thru the rom browser, but it would be nicer if it could simply replace the shortcut icon on the main screen.
Is that do-able?

The icons cannot be reconfigured manually at this point.

Well, is the firmware source code out anyplace? I don't mind doing it the hard way...
