the Gamecube drive worked the same way.. and if no drive softmod were ever released, there is a good reason for that: you can NOT defeat dvd drive hardware protection through software, nintendo just get this thing right (at least)
or atleast untill starlet is fully hacked
no, Starlet can not do that and will never be able to,
you REALLY have to understand that the drive firmware is a stand-alone software, it ONLY interfaces itself with Starlet through IOS to send/receive commands and datas.
If you send an unknow command, it is rejected by the firmware
And if your disc is not recognized by the drive firmware , commands sent by software are rejected, making it impossible to read the disc, this is common DVD protection.
The disc recognition is handled by the firmware, when the drive startup and this firmware is locked on the drive, this means it is NOT modificable or hackable with another software , the ONLY way to access it is through a drivechip connected to some physical (hardware) lines.
so, stop dreaming about DVD backup without a modchip, a lot of things are possible around WIi hacking and certainly a lot of stuff will come in future with patched IOS and bootcodes, but certainly not a softmod like on the dreamcast
