Gaming CROSSFIRE QUESTION

so i have to m4a79xtd evo (amd) and it has crossfire. there are 2 pcie 2.0 lanes with one gfx card they run at 16x if you have two its at 8x/8x but my question is if i put to 4890's will it be run like one 4890 or will you actually notice a performance increase?

Yeah there will be a big performance increase by having 2 cards. You will lose maybe 10% at most by using 8x/8x instead of 16x/16x nothing game changing maybe 5fps.

The performance under latest catalyst drivers is pretty good even better for 5xxx products. The difference between 8x and 16x is hardly noticeable.

Only by pushing benchmarks across to your card you will see a difference but in games , hardly , way way way way less then 10%.

It largely depends on your cpu being able to push enough data through those ports.

you cant corssfire anything older then the 3000 series as they didnt support crossfire x technology

anyway to your questions
its pointless and a waste of money to crossfire those 2 cards because it would down clock the 4870 to match the exact speeds and specs of the 4650
so you basically paid a ton of money just for another 4650

Never been to hardwareheaven even tho i been to most American websites. Rage3d isn't that bad but not that tech heavy either (compared with others). It is however one of the older websites that stayed authentic over the years. Cant say that about tomshardware nor about Anandtech.

You might want to checkout something like guru3d.com and check the driver section these guys are avid in reporting what works and sometimes have a lot of benchmarks people tend to take pride in reporting how well their setup functions under new drivers.

This one time this guy demonstrates how his 4x 5770 performs under new drivers and it was creepy

Btw crossfire doesn't function well with mixed cards. It works but the benefits are so so.

You should get one. I have a powercolor 5770 and is a brilliant card. I would not get a XFX one as they are now using there own custom PCB. The custom PCB versions do not have support for 3-way crossfire only 2 way and have different heatsink placements which could mean an aftermarket cooler would not fit. I would go with ASUS, Sapphire or MSI.

I only brought a Powercolor because it was the cheapest at the time and my card is a referance design from launch. so it is the was the same as all the cards that was on the market at the time. I paid £108 for it in november.

is overclocking dependent on just the cooler? or brand? or both because right now im using a 4650 sapphire and it has a tiny cooler and i can max it out in catalyst is this even normal?

well to an extent.... im still on my Pentium 4 3.2ht so yeah... to be honest it can play mw2 on high no lag at all on max it just lags in intense battles it can play cryisis on med no prob protype medium spore max lol mirrors edge max
