Since the team's stance is closed-source only, I can't accept that. Here is a great write up by MrLeRien on Internet Archive, minus the grammar:
2025-09-21 update: Linux support has been added to TCU. My point still stands on the preservation, i do not like that this project is essentially an unexplained black box that no one can modify. i understand the point where you don't want someone taking the entire project, adding one thing, having it unpatched forever and taking the blame for it, but these are not issues you fix by creating borderline malware*. Quite frankly i do not want to run this server emulator without some incredibly restrictive networking and a burner PC because of this. you don't need basic cybersecurity knowledge to understand why running obfuscated software with anti-debuggers and anti-vms (incredible jokes you've made in the error messages by the way, thanks tcu!!!) made by random Polish dudes on the internet is shady, and there's a reason AV software blocks programs on this single premise!!!!!! also, what exactly is next for TCU? is it going to be closed source to it's deathbed like one of the lead developers said? what about PS4/XboxOne/360 support? or support of older versions? are these features planned or will it never see the light of day? closed-source software, especially revival projects, are a nuisance to preservation. this is a remark i have made to the TCU team over nine months ago. the only guy who ever dared criticize the project and it's trajectory in the entire beta team has been left unheard. maybe it's time the team actually listens to the community and to the researchers for once instead of treating them like free labor for their black box. I wish i could like this project, i genuinely do. these people are genuinely talented and have made my childhood game playable again, but quite literally everything i have mentioned thus far could've been prevented so easely. i think what adds insult to injury is that this game launched SKG. you guys, especially you with this high amount of responsibility, should've been the example for preservation. i'm sorry for this rant, but these are sentiments that have been boiling for almost a year at this point, incredibly disappointing.
Just look up "The Crew 1.2.0.0 Internet Archive by MrLeRien" to view the comment in question. Whether it gets DMCA'd or not on github, I don't care. It's out there now. For the record, I didn't "hack" anyone or break into any server. This was a simple decompile/reverse engineer of their executable done by me. This is the source code for learning purposes only. If you want a compiled version, you can just download it from the official The Crew Unlimited website, I will not be distributing the binary. It's easy enough to compile yourself as it's just a WinForms application. You just need to open the solution in Visual Studio and build it. It should work out-of-the-box.
ENJOY!
I'm just going to roll my own. The server .dll is riddled with troll anti-debugging and it's not worth it to reverse engineer. So, I'll make my own and open-source it. The devs are selfish and childish.
