ROM Hack Connecting N3DS to internet

As some of you may know Im currently trying to put my N3DS on a cfw to play my backup.
I was just wondering, should I constantly have 3ds on a opendns (with blocked update servers)?
Or is it safe to simply connect to internet the standard way.

The thing is , Im afraid sysnand will automatically update like WiiU.
Is that possible?
