Gaming Computer restarting wtf

Ok I'm getting pissed off. My laptop keeps restarting randomly. It's even timed, sometimes it happens in 30 minutes since boot or sometimes 6 hours since boot but the point is it's happening frequently and I don't know what the cause of it is. My laptop is not even hot! I scanned my comp for any virus and nothing. I'm baffled. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Usually random restarts are caused by overheating, but it's hard to say without looking at the actual thing or if you provide more details.

What O/S do you have? I read that if they detect that your Windows 7 is not legitimate, your computer will restart constantly for every 2 hours?

Suggestion to rule out possible failure causes:
remove your HDD and boot off a LiveCD (very easy to do, all you have to do is download an ISO, burn it to a blank CD, insert the CD into your drive and restart the computer)

if you can use the LiveCD OS for more than 30 minutes, then it's probably a software bug or virus on the OS and you might aswell consider reinstalling. Or maybe it's your HDD thats faulty.

If you have issues starting the LiveCD OS, or it still restarts randomly, I see two reasons:
- your laptops RAM is faulty
- your CPU gets too hot (though other parts do not so you cant feel it) for some reason, eg. the fan died
either way, booting off a LiveCD should be very informative.

Sorry I should of been more specific. I'm running windows 7 ultimate. This laptop is a toshiba satellite. It's annoying because my family uses this computer and we depend on it so for it to restart every so often is troublesome.

It's not pirated but damn, it restarted again! I'll try the live cd see if it runs smoothly.

I have a Toshiba Satelitte and had the same problem once.
Too much dust got suck in the vents so i took the vaccum and cleaned it.

Toshiba Satelittes are known to overheat very easy and get dusty.

WOW.

You weren't kidding. I just got those compressed air cans with a skinny tube. Shot it in the vents and the whole thing just shot with dust all over the place!

Hopefully this fixes my problem!

If it was overheating ti would cut off, not restart, and refuse to cut back on until the temperature had reached a safe level again.

When Windows encounters a fatal error, the default setting for handling such an error is to automatically reboot the system. If the error occurs while Windows is booting, the operating system will become stuck in a reboot cycle--rebooting over and over instead of starting up normally. In that case, you'll need to disable the option for automatically restarting on system failure.

Right click "Computer" icon on your desktop and right click the word "computer" , select properties. Click "Advanced system settings" and UAC will pop up (if it's on), click Continue, then go to "start up and recovery". Uncheck "Automatically restart" under "system failure".

Then it'll display the BSOD instead of restarting to hide it, give us the error codes.
