I have 5.1.1 on an iPhone 4. I want to be able to use apps that require 6.x now. I don't have SHSH blobs for anything but my current 5.1.1. I take it that I can not update to anything but the newest 7.1.0?

Is there a way/tool (iExplorer?) for me to do this update without losing app data that doesn't sync with iCloud, for example Bejeweled high scores?

Sorry that this went unanswered for a month. :\ If you still need it answered… There is no way to update your iPhone 4 to 6.x without the SHSHs. Things like high scores for App Store games should be part of an iTunes backup, so restoring from said backup should bring back your high scores.

On an unrelated note, I pushed my (more) stripped version of the guide now. If there was something that you wanted, I can bring it back before I delete my copy of the old guide in about a month.

Impossible atm.
No jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1.
Because he asked you to jailbreak it, it is obvious he does not have any SHSH blobs saved. He can not downgrade or jailbreak at this time.

thank you, i did get confused since when i scrolled down/opened the spoilers did see the 7.1 guide, and i searched other places and i found it could be hacked with a tethered jailbreak..

DO NOT UPDATE TO iOS 7/8!
Preserve iOS 6 while you can!
Take a screenshot of the error. I can probably help fix it.
Cydia works on iOS 6, though you probably ran into a bad install that corrupted Cydia.

As far as jailbreak goes are there some apps I'll never be able to use until I update to IOS 7/8? I really dont like the neon new age crap the IOS 7/8 offers and would prefer to stay on 6 as long as possible. I know I'll have to update someday but I prefer not to right now.

To answer your question I remember being on the very latest IOS 6 update before IOS 7 came out. I liked IOS 6 so much I made sure it was the latest one for it. Also on iPhone 5 if that matters too.

The iPhone 4 is a special case. You can downgrade/upgrade to any firmware regardless of SHSH blobs.

Can you check your iOS version in Settings > General > About for me?

To fix the error close all of your apps then goto Settings and turn on Airplane mode.
When Airplane mode is on, turn off your phone.
Turn your phone back on.
Turn Airplane mode OFF.

Open Cydia - error should be gone.

You can stay on iOS 6 as long as you like! There is not really any groundbreaking reason to update.

Downgrade to 8.3- nevermind the Window is closed.
Use TaiG's jailbreak tool and be sure to uncheck the chinese appstore installer. If you plan to go the pirate's route, I would still recommend staying away from the bundled solution and instead go with more popular tools.
