A Nokia phone? Damn it... I had a feeling something wouldn't work. :(

I put up a third method for the guide, which hopefully works with Nokia phones too. This method has not been tested thoroughly, however.

Nokia phones can't be jailbroken. Everyone knows that their endurance is so high, they can't be broken in any way. Sorry.

April Fools! I hope you guys enjoyed learning about how to break your device! :) If you missed it, I reproduced it below. I certainly hope everybody had enough common sense to not follow the burning instructions!

(P.S.- If you highlight the switchover announcement, you'll see that I said it was an April Fools joke. And thanks to the magic of languages, searching for "April" or "Fools" with Command-F/Control-F didn't pick it up. :P)
Complete iOS Jailbreaking Device Breaking Guide
"The beat goes on" "The best paperweight money can buy!" Edition
This guide was last significantly updated on February 29, 2013 at 12:14 AM EST.

This guide is maintained by Dialexio, with help from iFish. It was based on the guide written by Danny600kill, iFish, and alidsl, but has since been rewritten.

Glossary
DFU Mode, SHSH, tethered jailbreak… Who cares about those terms? Jailbreaking your device is too complicated. Breaking your device, on the other hand, is super-easy.

Brick: Not to be confused with "brick." A brick is a device that has been rendered inoperable, except as a paperweight.
Nokia phone: Stop right here. You probably can't damage it.
Warranty: Non-existent safety net for devices.
Water sensor: Apple devices have water sensors throughout, to see if the device was submerged in a liquid or not. One of them is in the headphone jack.

Can your device be broken?
YES! Jailbreak, schmailbreak… You can break any device on any firmware! If it works, it can be broken! Heck, you can even break non-iOS devices, like the Wii or LG Nexus 4!

What device do I have?
Tch… Who cares? Anything Almost anything can break. The only thing you need to keep an eye out for are Nokia phones. Those things are known to break even steamrollers, man.

Important Notes About This Guide
The author(s) of this guide have done everything in their power to ensure that every step is correct, and you can and will end up with a broken result. However, things can go awry at any time. Your gadgets must be jonesing for a drink... After all, when was the last time they had a drink?

...My thoughts exactly.

What You'll Need:
  • A bathtub
  • Hot water/A water heater
  • A paintstick (or something to stir with)
  • Table salt (optional, but recommended)

Guide
  1. Fill your bathtub with scalding hot water.
  2. Pour in some good ol' table salt. (The salt you throw outside on icy paths should work too.)
  3. Stir vigorously.
  4. Throw your dog gadgets in for a bath. For best results, make sure they are unplugged (for safety reasons).
  5. If you happen to have spare or almost-dead batteries, throw them in too.
  6. Stir vigorously.
  7. Drain the water.
  8. If your device is known to have liquid sensors (e.g. an iPod), you may want to squirt a drop of bleach on it. (Apple likes to use the headphone port for that.)

What's more fun than having a fully-functional device? Undoing everything that makes it work!

What You'll Need:
  • Access to concrete
  • Safety scissors
  • Solder + Soldering gun/iron
  • Anti-static wrist strap
  • Optional: A pet, friend, or relative

Guide
  1. Hold your device in your hand.
  2. Go outside. It's a beautiful day.
  3. Toss it in the air, and onto the sidewalk. (Alternatively, you can play fetch with your pet, or catch with another person… First one to drop it wins!)
CAUTION: Make sure the device does not land on your head. For safety reasons, you may choose to wear a bicycle helmet.
  4. After a few drops, the device should in multiple pieces, or a panel should be removable.
  5. Since we will be working with a device's internals, be sure to wear your anti-static wrist strap.
  6. Disconnect the battery or power supply once you're inside. If you cannot disconnect it (e.g. it's soldered), gently hack away at its wires with safety scissors.
  7. ...On second thought, you might want a powered-up CPU. Solder a few connections to the CPU pins. If no CPU pins are exposed, rub the CPU with sandpaper until circuitry is exposed.
  8. Uh... I guess that's it?

Alternatively, iFixit has a wonderful video highlighting a way to open an iPad. This should work for all devices with at least one glass side.

"KILL IT WITH FIRE!"

guide_mac.png

guide_win.png

Phones don't need firewalls to stay safe; they need fire walls.

What You'll Need:
  • Match, lighter, or flamethrower
  • Gasoline
  • Anti-static mat
  • Aerosol spray deodorant, hairspray, or sunblock

Guide
  1. Hold your device in your hand.
  2. Go outside. It's a beautiful day.
  3. Lay out the anti-static mat.
  4. Soak it in gasoline. Do not use all of it up at once.
  5. Place the device on it.
  6. Douse the device with gasoline.
  7. Set it on fire.
  8. After waiting a few minutes, it might be a good idea to remove the device from the fire. Spray your hands and arms with the deodorant/sunblock and retrieve it.
CAUTION: I have found that, on occasion, your arm may catch on fire. If this happens, use whatever gasoline you have left to put it out. So apparently, the fact that gasoline is inflammable means that it burns easily. Huh... Who would've thought?
  9. Since your arms and device are on fire now, you should probably stop, drop, and roll, and call for help or something.

More to come!

Broken screen?
I've lost track of how many times I've seen or heard of an iPhone with a crack in its front... And I don't even advertise being able to replace the front glass! Here's some advice that should help you convince your Apple Store Genius that your iPhone was defective.

  • Gorilla Glass is supposed to be durable, but this thing cracked after I ran over it with my pickup truck.
  • It came like this when I received it from UPS (or FedEx, whichever you despise more).
  • An Apple Store Specialist in Grand Central tripped, and the phone took a dive from the balcony.

Brick?
Murphy's Law states, "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." Just because it has an Apple logo on it doesn't mean it's exempt!

  • I noticed the display's colors were too cold, so I threw the iPad in the microwave and hit "Frozen Dinner." Now it doesn't work.
  • A virus must be preventing the iPad from turning on.
  • The device said it was too hot to operate, so I thought dunking it in the bathtub to cool it down was a good idea.
  • Wait, hooking an iPad up to a car battery doesn't make it charge faster?!

Scuffed back?
WD-40 solves all of your problems. For future reference, cover your device in duct tape. Not only will your device be scratch-proof, it will also look ugly as !@#$ and nobody will want to steal it. Easy-peasy.

FAQ
  1. What happened to the jailbreaking stuff?
    - Jailbreaking? I'm done with that crap. Nothing epic happens anymore. A new firmware that plugs vulnerabilities is released, then the jailbreak devs just sit with their thumbs up their ass for seven months while asking for donations. Lather, rinse, repeat.
AРRIL FОOLS! The guide will return at midnight on Арril 2 (EST).
  2. Could you at least provide an outdated version of the guide?
    - No. That could really mess up your device and leak your personal info everywhere.

  3. Is this an April Fool's joke?
    - I'm sick of saying it, so I'll let this cat answer you for me.

  4. ...Is that a Rickroll link?
    - Are you seriously asking this? Rickrolling is so 2008.
AРRIL FОOLS! (But seriously, it's not a Rickroll.)

    - I'm gonna write a jailbreaking fanfiction. Look forward to it! ^_^

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Errors? I don't care; you really shouldn't need a guide like this to break your device!

In iOS jailbreaking news… This was announced a day or two ago, but posixninja (from the Chronic Dev-Team) announced that he has enough exploits for a jailbreak. They will be stockpiled until at least iOS 7.0, however.

I am about to Jailbreak my iPhone 4 that I just bought off craigslist. It's been updated to 6.1 and I plan to use evasi0n. A while back, they shut down Installous. How will I be able to get apps/install them now?

If you mean how to get apps legitimately, either get them from the iTunes Store or the Cydia store. You may have to pay for certain apps.
If you mean how to pirate apps for free, you will find no help in these forums. The moderators moderate all such talk.

Well, "succesfully" installed a custom IPSW to my ipod touch 2g, MC. After restoring it to the custom IPSW I made from Sn0wbreeze on itunes, my computer doesn't even recognize my device anymore. The ipod is stuck on the picture of the usb arrow with iTunes. I can shut it off regularly, the usb sounds off that my iPod was indeed inserted, but itunes and my computer won't recognize it. Someone help please T_T

edit: I should be more clear. Upon restarting my computer, my computer recognized my ipod and downloaded the driver information, then promptly crapped out again. iTunes allowed me to attempt to restore my ipod to my custom ipsw, but error 3194 came up, and iTunes failed to recognize my ipod after that.

This has become a horrendously frustrating jailbreaking process for me. I originally started to use Greenp0ison to no avail, as my ipod never jailbroke from that method. It succesfully went in to DFU mode but wasn't able to jailbreak. I then used Redsn0w, succesfully jailbreaking, albeit it was tethered. Attempting to un-tether it, I attempted to use Sn0wbreeze, in which I created a custom IPSW. I then attempted to restore my ipod to the custom IPSW I just created. Everything seemed succesful (saw the snowflake symbol upon loading up), but now I can't exit the "Connect to iTunes" screen. My ipod charges when hooked up, but neither my computer or iTunes recognizes it.

Redsn0w seems to recognize it but nothing else does. I can't restore my ipod touch to any IPSW, official or my own. So, am I screwed?

Edit2: Fixed the ipod.

Anyone know if 6.1.4 iPhone 5 can be jailbroken yet? Just got one fresh and was a bit curious, sadly lost my iPhone 4S due to a water accident.

Nobody is trying to jailbreak 6.1.3/6.1.4. Limited jailbreaks exist for older devices (iPhone 4) on 6.1.3 but with iOS 7 right around the corner, those with the exploits are waiting for that to hit first.

Howdy folks. Long time, no see… There's nothing interesting to report, but another tool called "unthredera1n" (that's the actual spelling) is available for jailbreaking… wait for it…

iOS 5.x on Linux. It looks and sounds pretty fake, but it has been analyzed by various names in iPhone hacking, including planetbeing and saurik. If people do want me to write up a tutorial, I'll try to churn out something out. (The only Linux setup I have is a virtual machine, which isn't ideal for jailbreaking…)

There isn't really anything new to report on for iOS 7 right now. UnthreadedJB was disbanded around a month ago at the demand of recognizable names in iOS jailbreaking (read: members of evad3rs), despite being legitimate. I know that progress is being made on a iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 jailbreak though— at the moment, 6.1.3 kernel dumps are currently being sought after for certain devices.

Still nothing new to report. iOS 7 still doesn't have a jailbreak, and iPad Air and the retina iPad mini are out.

UPDATE: Of course, the day after I write this post, Apple pushes iOS 7.0.4… and iOS 6.1.5, for the iPod touch 4G. They don't fix any vulnerabilities for jailbreaking, so updating is fine if you're already on iOS 7, or 6.1.3 on the iPod touch 4G.

I do have my facts straight; I actually know who's behind it, you know.

Or maybe… I was just trolling when I said that.

Someone gave me a new ipad 2,1. However, the firmware is 6.1.3. Does that mean I can't downgrade and jailbreak?

Unfortunately, you're not able to downgrade or jailbreak. (Hopefully the latter gets addressed before the year ends, though!)

It feels like its been months since the last jailbreak(think it has been.) Hell, there were only 1-2 whole exploits throughout the IOS 6 firmware. Well be lucky to get one this time around.

Thanks for updating Dialexio, your doing great.

Good news and bad news, folks.

Good news: An untethered iOS 7 jailbreak was released! (It does not include 6.1.3-6.1.5, sadly.)

Bad news: I will not even mention its name because it can assist with piracy (though all of you probably know what it is). A whole soap opera erupted on my Twitter timeline as a result. An announcement is supposed to be made on reddit later, and it appears that it will be removed.

If you are going to use the iOS 7 jailbreak, you must update with an IPSW (i.e. iTunes). There is a known bug that does not work with devices that were updated OTA. If you already updated to 7.0.4 OTA, simply updating with iTunes (download the IPSW, Shift-Restore or Opt-Restore the Update button) is probably sufficient enough. (No guarantees with that though— always back up your device before doing something like jailbreaking!)
————————
The evad3rs released a letter addressing today's drama. (SaurikIT's saurik, perhaps best known for Cydia, also responded to this letter.) Regardless of the statements, the iOS 7 jailbreak still contains stuff that helps with piracy. As long as it helps promote piracy, I will not endorse its use with this guide. (It's a rushed piece of beta-quality software anyways, from what I hear.)

UPDATE: pod2g announced that installation of the app in question was remotely disabled until the matter was further investigated. That being said, I still cannot endorse this jailbreak because of how the installation was further prevented (remotely disabling). This means that if they wanted to put in something that offered cracked apps again, they can easily perform the change on the fly for new jailbreakers. (Note: I am not saying that they will or will not do this, but it's certainly possible.)
