It would be untethered for life if the bootrom exploit was untethered. But since the bootrom exploit in both limera1n and greenpois0n is tethered, you need another exploit to untether it. The one that untethers greenpois0n and limera1n is a userland exploit (probably) so when a new firmware comes out, the userland exploit will get overwritten and will leave behind the tethered bootrom exploit (which can't be overwritten)

EDIT: Is there any way to jailbreak the Phone 3g on 4.1 without using an ispw? (greenpois0n style)

Well unless ur limera1n as a seperate jailbreak then yh, but if ur not then i doubt it. I havnt heard anyfing bout something lyk that tho.

redsn0w. But keep in mind that updating to 4.1 will also update the baseband, which is a no-no if you depend on a carrier unlock!

greenpois0n and limera1n don't support the iPhone 3G, and probably never will. :s

Hey guys I have decided I wanted to update my ipod touch 2nd gen to 4.1 (to get gamecenter and to have more apps work). So my question is what would be the best program to update it and then jailbreak it again. Currently my ipod touch is 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackrain. I have read about the programs but they all seem to do the same thing just under a different name.

You can create a custom ipsw with sn0wbreeze and update to it

When I tried restoring to the ispw created by sn0wbreeze it said it could not be restored. I used the iPod2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore for the original.

Thanks again guys I figured out my problem I needed to update itunes and since I messed up my ipod I just restored to the official 4.1 but then used greenpoison to do the jailbreak. Thanks again I really appreciate even though I did not do the suggested method.

I've read on some other sites that for some people limera1n works only if iTunes is open. If this is true, can you add it to your guide?

I recently got an iPhone 4 on firmware 4.1 and baseband 2.10.4 OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED by Apple. Just wondering, is it possible to dump the firmware and restore it to other iPhones which are locked and still waiting for an unlock?

I don't think you can do the baseband part.

Since if it was that easy all we would need is one person to buy an offically unlocked phone and dump it for the rest of us to use. If it wast that easy we wouldn't need untrasn0w

So, I am going to say no. I don't think it is possible.
