MD5 are the files checking hashes, on Linux you can use md5sum to make md5 hashes for files and input.

More seriously, if the SD card is removed during the downgrade process, then it'll brick. If you throw it on the wall, there is a chance that the SD card disconnects.

Yes, to check the files integrity. That's what MD5 hashes are meant for: checking that the files are correct.

A. Downloading
B. The downloader will usually give a SHA1 or MD5 hash. If your downloaded file and the posted sum match your file is not corrupt.
