So it looks like this new update deletes patchmii_core
Future updates will almost definitely delete any cIOS, and also probably block their installation

My question: is the cIOS necessary for running backups off a dvd, or just running the actual ISO. If its just needed for reading wouldn't this leave hope for future versions running off a usb (or usb dvd player, lol).

the cIOS is nessacary for running the applications such as the cIOS DVD Dumper and the DVD Backup Loader, which allows for you play burnt games

Ok, but in theory its not necessary for ALL backup playing.

So its only neccessary for:
1) Creating backups using the wii (its currently possible to use certain commercial dvd drives to do this too)
2) Running backups FROM A DVD (as usb speeds increase it should still be possible to read the isos that way)

In theory could the backup scene move in a different direction, opting not to read from dvds and instead from external storage devices, all without the need for a cIOS?

cios are very important cause they contain the dip module that the system runs of when running an application it's like prx for the PSP , it's like fuel injector for your car engine , so you have to have em .
