Easiest way to check would be to trying running bootmii on startup.

edit:

If you can can boot into it from startup you have boot2, if you need a proxy e.g. HBC or priiloader you have only as ios.

Is the boot2 the only version that can restore nand backups?

Afaik ios can, the main difference is that boot2 runs before the system menu, increasing anti-brick protection.

If you have only as ios, then I’d recommend installing priiloader but this is removed if you reinstall the system menu and requires the system menu ios.

Can you elaborate or rephrase this, as a troubleshooting measure I was considering reinstalling the system menu (as it does not work without maintenance mode) I have both bootmii and priiloader installed into boot. Would reinstalling the system menu wad break anything or delete anything (homebrew and non-homebrew related)

Do you have bootmii as boot2 and do you have a valid backup from prior to this issue?

priiloader installed into boot
That's impossible, priiloader installs itself as the wii menu (ie title 00000001-00000002), renaming the actual wii menu executable to another file within the same title

If you really have bootmii as boot2, that will continue to work even if the main filesystem area is completely gone (and breaking the wii menu title and/or its IOS are lesser offences :P )

If you only have bootmii as ios, that's completely useless for brick recovery, both in your case (as you can't exactly run it without priiloader, that is removed by reinstalling a wii menu title) and in general (if you can use priiloader, you can run homebrew and therefore have better solutions to bannerbricks and defective themes than a mass restore)

Afaik ios can
...if you have a GC controller and the means to connect one, that is, due to a gratuitous limitation put in by the developers

I thought you could use power and reset? Or is that just an ‘as ios’ thing?
http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii
You can use power and reset to reach the restore option (nowadays - they didn't work in the earliest versions of bootmii if installed as ios due to a bug), but then the bootmii gui (ie the part on the SD which you could replace directly with the linux kernel) does a check and wants you to press the konami code if it sees you don't have bootmii as boot2...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

iirc, I think a syscheck also shows bootmii if it's ios. ios 254 iirc. I don't have that hdd connected to be sure though.
It is 254, but not all IOS254 are bootmii-ios

might show in syscheck if boot2, but I'm not sure.
The sysCheck only shows Priiloader (if installed) and BootMii as IOS. If you have BootMii installed as boot2, then it will not show up.

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive.
