I can't advise you specific to this game, generally searching for a number you can see on screen should be fairly easy for most games. You are vague in what you did so I can't help you there. I would normally start with ==* and ram. The latest edizon se would default to u32 == and ram, press - once to change it to ==*.
ram is good idea as heap would take up most time and main and whatever that is left of ram is almost nothing.
==* search also for float and double in addition to u32, occasionally the values are in the other two format
u8 is one of the last resort, most modern game won't be using it. u8 and u16 are for those lame ports of very old game that ends up just emulating the old machine. Occasionally some newer game do have some strange packed structure, it's very rare. The extra time and number of search required to converge is simply not going to give you much benefit and sometime you are going to end up with a large collection no matter how many time you search.
Gut feel, u32 covers 80% of the games. u32+float+double probably >95%.

I'm not sure what it is with this game but I can't even do a basic search. Whenever I try to continue my search after changing the value, it hard crashes my entire console. No issues searching on any other game.
I just meant doing a basic memory search. Is that not the standard method of finding a simple value anymore? I dunno, I touch my switch maybe once every few months now. If that. I do update my FW and homebrew each time though, so everything should be up to date.
All i did was search for the money value. I've tried u8 through u32. The first search works but trying to do a second for the changed value pops an error screen and forces a console restart 100% of the time.
There is no standard way to do search, you need to describe how in the first place you are able to perform search. Nintendo certainly did not include this feature.
How to enable search can be very complex depending from where you start from. Anywhere in that process could have gone wrong and result in a unstable system. The most common problem is having too many sysmodules running. You could be running sx os and in that case I have zero knowledge that can be useful to you.
