Celeste developers have cancelled their new game

In 2021, Extremely OK Games, notable developers behind the indie hit Celeste, announced that they were working on a new project, Earthblade. The team set a launch window of 2023, then pushed it back to 2024, further delaying the game to sometime after 2024. However, in a blog post, lead designer Maddy Thorson announced that there will be no more delays, as they have decided to cancel the game entirely. One of the reasons behind Earthblade's troubled cycle came from internal disagreements over who held the IP rights to Celeste, with Extremely OK Games' art director leaving the company as a result. This led to the team looking back at the slow progress they'd made, and decide to end development. While Earthblade won't come to be, the remaining team has decided to work on smaller projects for now,

because they are over saturating the market. most end up being some cheap pos made in rpgmaker cash grab made by some noob. plus it's 2025 the nes era is over!
this is the mentaility that brought us to 2025 game optimization where everything looks photo-realistic yet you can only get 30FPS on a 4090

There's plenty of unoptimized 2d games, rpgmaker, like he mentioned for example, is of them, some of it's games struggle 60fps on the strongest of the machines, lazy devs are everywhere from 2d to 3d.

Source: I play a lot of 2d games, and a lot of rpgmaker ones but i haven't bought a single one of the latter.

Sounds like the art director was pretty key to a game like this. If only they had settled ownership years ago and could all have moved on and looked forward to making more money with Earthblade. Oh well.

Yeah don't care.
Unlike most people here tho, I heard about it. Really liked Celeste too. But there wasn't much shown. Kinda surprised it's been canceled but this doesn't seem like a big loss

The question is: Did you play through To The Moon, and if so, what's your review?

I'm just tired of the oversaturated market today of rogue-like, difficult metroivanias. Bring me back some Catlevania SOTN style RPG/puzzle metroidvanias. There's definitely still a market for it as seen with Bloodstained, but it's so much more rare to see. Everyone wants to be the next Super Meat Boy, Hollow Knight, or Celeste.

And some of these comments are just ignorant as hell. I don't understand why anyone cares about anyone else's gender identity or sexuality and never will. It's never impacted me or my life. Adults are so stupid sometimes. Kids handle this stuff better, that's how bad it is. Grow up.

Listen, I don’t normally like to be “that” guy and respond to something so thinly veiled, but what do you mean by this?

Go on. I implore you to give an honest response.
Nobody has said it but it's pretty clear what some people don't like about Celeste in this thread lol
You see it in the subtle jabs like misgendering Maddy and calling the developers "weirdos"

I wouldn't say their dogwhistles are exactly subtle, but yeah.

I do realize in retrospect that what I said in my previous reply probably counts as flamebaiting per the rules, so probably best for a mod to remove that since I can't delete the post myself.

Guys i think We found Team Meat 2.0, just with a minor difference (you know the one)
What do you mean by this?

GBATemp just has a lot of troubled, bitter people. They revel in seeing things they feel somehow opposed to getting cancelled or set back in some way.
not sure how EXOK is a "studio of weirdos" but this is real life, people have conflict, like what happened in this instance. Also i'm sure the game would have been good.
I think we know the real reason people in here are being so dismissive about it. A couple of them have practically dropped the mask and said it out loud. 🙃
