I got my hopes up when they said there was gonna be a 2D mode. Then I saw that screenshot earlier and was grossed out.Snailface said:Now this is more like it. The Cave Story 3ds devs have added a 2d sprite mode.
The project is saved.(maybe)

I don't know why they don't just port the PSP version for the sake of completeness. Maybe legal issues, lack of funding, or laziness.Ikki said:When we started on the project back in December, I really wanted to find a way to make 2D characters also work in 3D space. Being a Cave Story fan myself, I thought other fans would probably appreciate it too. Anyway, we've spent a lot of time testing and making sure it works right, but now we have 2D characters in the 3D game. This includes the main character, Curly, all the Mimiga-- literally every character and boss in the game as 2D sprites in a 3D world. What you won't see, due to the fact that it's a new engine and differences between the hardware, are the environments in 2D or the WiiWare sprites and art.Snailface said:Now this is more like it. I was hoping it was totally 2D.
Here is a Nicalus developer explaining their actions:

That looks hideous. They're "trying" to pay homage to the original by slapping 2D sprites over a 3D background. Aren't they so clever...
This is by far the worst looking version of Cave Story I've seen though. I would recommend not buying this and get it for free on the PC, PSP or a bunch of other places it got ported to.
Or how about it's because the PSP version is a port and is homebrew.Snailface said:I don't know why they don't just port the PSP version for the sake of completeness. Maybe legal issues, lack of funding, or laziness.
I know it's weird, but it gives the game a lot more hope to not see the horrid 3D models they were using.KingVamp said:It suddenly looks more promising because of 2D visuals in a 3D environment?
How does one change do that?
This game has so many different feelings towards it. (whether it be bias or not)
