Iv'e never been interested in the DS but the little one knows how to play some games on the DS especially the barbie, disney princess games lol. Anyway to cut a long story short, what's the best way of going about things? I'm sure i need to purchase some R2 card or something? If so, which one is best and why, thanx guys!

My.2yr old has a r4i gold. Its a clone card but it was $6 shipped from overseas. He knows how to work it and select which game he wants.

Buy an R4 (www.r4ds.com) so you can load Wood firmware. There only $2-$3 dollars shipped right now. The only downside is you can't have a micro SD card larger than 2GB, which will still fit about 30 games. Here is a link to a cheap one but you'll have to wait about 19 days to get it. The firmware you need to download is called Wood and it's at version 1.40 right now. It's the best combination for the cheapest and the best. It is also much easier to use than most other flash cards. :D

Stay away from r4, not because there not good cards but because theres so many clones out there that arent good cards and its kinda a lottery as to what you get.

If your on a budget acekards your best bet, good compatibility and updated frequently

If your rich get a supercard dstwo, you can watch movies, play SNES games and Gameboy Advance games

I'd also suggest getting an acekard.

I bought a second hand ds lite which came with a r4 card (clone) although the firmwire wasn't very good in my opinion and It only works thanks to a user here who updates it. There's so many clones and fakes that it might be very confusing for you as to where to obtain the kernal. I'd go with acekard, nice themes very user friendly. I have a mega drive emulator on my sons card, many games and it supports many homebrew applications too. I struggled with the r4 card and still do, games are fine but useful apps like 'colors' or any emulator just doesn't load for me.

How about buying something like a learners frog. Why a DS at such a early age? If I had a kid I am preventing him or her from ever getting into video games.

I really like my Supercard DS2, but if you want something cheap get an r4i gold and throw wood on it. Yes, there are a lot of r4 clones, but if you buy it from one of the official resellers (which cost a little more), you will almost certainly get a real one.

I don't think a toddler should be into cards like the SCDS2 yet (expensive with features she may not use), unless it's also gonna be used by someone else. Simplicity is key, so yeah, genuine R4DS (with Wood firmware), or R4i Gold (I believe this forum has a review, with Wood firmware too), or an AceKard 2i. Aside from the R4DS, they can use SDHC microSD cards.

My sister started playing computer games around that age, got her DS sometime after and jumped onto Super Scribblenauts. Her vocabulary's huge right now (she's 7 and can jump 2 grades if we wanted her to) so video games aren't all that bad, depends on which you chuck onto your kids.

Yeah i'll probs get a AceKard 2i, they have decent reviews. Does it play normal movies orite on it too?

FlashX007: She's had a learning leap frog book system when she was in her early 2's, they are rubbish in all fairness.
She wants a DS for Xmas due to playing her nieces DS whenever she gets to see her, once a month maybe. I mean of course, she will only be allowed to play it for an hour or so here and there but still.....

This won't be a clone will it: http://www.r4dsnds.c...hc-tf-card.html

All i need it for is to play the games that i haven't purchased, i have already bought hello kitty party, Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses and a brain training game i think lol.
Lets be honest i'm unlikely to buy original games for this since she wont play them enough and just wont be worth it. So the 3 i own already will do haha.

It's actually called the R4i-Gold by www.r4ids.cn however it may be a little too complex for a 3 1/2 year old.

Go to www.xpertron.co.uk to order if you do get a flashcart. They may be a little more expensive but they don't sell fake carts and are based in the U.K. unlike most retailers with the .co.uk domain name.

The site you listed above is in china? Yes it will be a 1:1 Clone as R4's came out of production when the were sued by Nintendo in 2008.

The team that made the card split up and started making other cards.
All R4 originals sold today are a clone but nothing to worry about as the run a firmware called Wood

There are other cheaper places in UK check out gbatemps shoptemp
or here.

does the R4 allow downloaded movies to be played too? doesn't matter about non sdhc support as only my hd cams and wii take use of those.
Which would be the easiest to use? Menu wise, etc... all i need it to do is play games, some movies and run some homebrew for when i decide to ever attempt to have a go on it like a nes, snes emulator etc.

to play downloaded video on r4 you would have to first convert the video to dpg and use moonshell for playback. moonshell is like a media player homebrew. I personally recommend either an acekard cause it has wayyyyy better game compatibility or a supercard dstwo which has an onboard cpu that gives it more power thus it can playback avi video as well as run game boy advance games and super nintendo games as well. hope that helped :yaynds:

That's it, i'll go for a AceKard only, yeah i saw those super cards, damn interesting like, but won't require the extra horsepower in all honestly, unless you know of a more cheaper place to get one than what iv'e seen. :)

just to keep things simple i would get a simple clone like ace3ds (alothough it can't play 3ds games)
Yeah, no matter it will only ever be needed for the DSLite anyway.... :)

With Wood firmware the R4 has the best compatibility of any cart.

Pros: If you're looking for a slot 1 flash kit with 100% ROM compatibility, complete "drag 'n' drop" ease-of-use and don't plan on expecting much more from the cart, then I can definitely recommend the R4 DS as your solution.

Cons: None for price Only takes 2gb micro sd(Does not except SDHC)

Other Thoughts: Now with 99.9% game compatibility. The R4 looks great and feels great. It has a very user-friendly OS that is fully skinable. The compatibility with roms and homebrew is the best among all carts. There is no doubt that R4DS is a winner.

Bottomline: Very simple card, easy to use, runs games and homebrew pretty good. So far havnt had any problems with it. Wood R4 1.40 works like a charm. With a 2gb sd u can fit a good 40 games on it. Very satisfied with this product.
