I wish people would one day start promoting Ubuntu for its actual benefits vs Windows (to name an incredibly important one which never seems to get mentioned; the package manager) instead of claiming it to be superior in areas where it is inferior to Windows.
Pretty much. Common and stupid reasons people switch to Ubuntu:
- Faster
- No viruses
- Better compatibility (believe me, this is more common than you think)
- Compiz Fusion

Windows 7 just blew me out of the water, I was really surprised it was that good, light and fast.
I used Vista for a year or so and then 7 came out, and I could easily upgrade to 7, without formatting anything. Fantastic work Microsoft did with it. Same for IE 9 by the way, damn that's a sexy browser!

Now that's interesting. What could they have done with IE9 that makes up for all the slowness, vulnerability and sheer instability of the previous versions?

They just revised the previous versions a lot, added a lot of new features and a very sexy lay-out.
Here are some comparisons of the IE9 beta with the other latest browsers:

Review

I've got Firefox, Chrome, IE 9, Opera and Safari on my PC, and I like the lay-out of IE9 the most. It's just a stunning revision and it shows that Microsoft finally can create something decent again. IE9, Windows 7, Windows Phone 7 and Windows Security Essentials all prove that IMHO

Except you can replicate any UI component of IE9 in FF quite easily.

That is why FF is superior. It's robust extensibility lets you tailor it to best serve your needs, instead of settling for the "OOTB" experience other browsers stick you with.

I voted for Windows + Vista.

Mainly because I have used Vista for a few years, and haven't been able to adapt to my 7 dual boot yet because the version of 7 I received is 64-bit, meaning I'd have to do a clean install

7 is good for what I've used though, I just use Vista more often, thus it gets my vote.

Now as per the topic, after being a primarily Windows user for about a decade (although working with *nix and BSDs as server platforms and some more niche usage), finally built a hackintosh three years ago (shortly after 10.5's release). Since then I've found OSX superior in almost every respect that I find relevant in my work.

However, my computer usage is approximately 0-10% gaming, depending on the given day. For these periods I do have a Windows machine on standby, as unfortunately many game developers write for the platform exclusively.

Having used nearly every OS on the planet... I can honestly say they all have strengths and weaknesses.

For me its less about the OS and more about the hardware and what you want to do with it. If you want to play new games your going to want lots of hardware and Windows. If you just want to browse the net and are only interested in email and facebook then almost any hardware will do and Linux is honestly probably the best choice.

Right tool for the job at hand.

I agree, even since I built an hackintosh with retail OSX (originally with 10.5, then I upgraded to 10.6) I loved OSX, it's just stable and "organized" (don't know how to explain that

).
For that reason, when I had to buy a notebook I chose a macbook (it's a pain to properly configure OSX86 on non-Apple hardware, most mobile GPU/WLAN drivers don't exist, DSDT is harder to edit etc.).
Nevertheless, I also like Windows 7 (IMHO, Microsoft just needs to do something about that damn system registry) and Ubuntu.

How one could brush off "the OS" as an inconsequential choice brings skepticism to your (obviously false) claim to have "used nearly every OS on the planet." I'd venture to guess you're definitely not qualified to give advice on the subject.

What you're experiencing is a difference in developer idealogy. Apple moves their software forward. They promote and implement cutting-edge technologies and make the difficult changes when a new solution presents itself. While there are downsides to this (breaking third-party code, and well, it requires certain strengths that Microsoft as a company doesn't really have), it's left OSX as the more modern and attractive choice.

Now to contrast, Microsoft has just stacked new layers onto the same code base for 15 years, leaving us with the muddled mess of antiquated concepts (one such concept being the singular "system registry") we know as Windows.

The two work together so you need both working together well. This is why people like Apple computers, though for others, Windows will suffice as well. It really becomes a real problem for some people trying to run Linux or a hackintosh, especially on laptops.

i voted windows, and for 7.

Personally, I dual boot. I'm not very good with Linux, but learn more all the time.
i believe it depends on what you intend to do with the computer.

Mac OS is made with a Linux core. Does that not make it a type of Linux?

It is made with a Unix core. The Linux kernel is a modified and open-source Unix kernel.

Yes, it's based on Darwin.

Best OS for me is either ArchLinux or Slackware because, for me, they're easier to use. I don't need or want any of that wizard crap, it just gets in my way. It is for that reason that I say XP is the best Windows OS, as the latest version that doesn't send you to a wizard whenever you try to change a setting.

Hi Gay Cat Boy. I wanted to tell you something that is funny to me. Your signature have the initial of your GBAtemp nickname right. AGLCB.

AGLCB to me is >>> AGLCB = A Guai Lan Chi Bai (Guai Lan Chi Bai is in hokkien)
Hokkien is a Chinese dialect.

Literally it means "A Strange Penis Pussy". Chi Bai means pussy in hokkien.

If translate it properly, it's: "An Irritating Pussy."
