Never heard of Marathon... and Hexen isn't a FPS, you just have a hand to punch and kill people
Marathon is The precursor to halo from Bungie, It was on the old macs but has been ported to alot of systems now adays, and Hexen while didn't have much of if any guns did have projectile weapons so it was a fps of sorts.

Okay, weirdo. Sheesh.

By your own logic Strife isn't either.. You can shoot in Hexen. So, yes.. Yes it is an FPS mister.

Pretty sure, since you put 'Quake (any of the old ones)' you could've done the same with Doom and perhaps avoided the shitstorm that's already started . Plus maybe my vote of Unreal Tournament (which I actually fired up yesterday believe it or not!) could've been added instead of me having to vote for Other..... I mean, Final Doom?? :wtf:

Lol, I was gonna do that but then I got bored so I decided to add a lot of options.

Heh "Classic" for me pretty much means Doom and Doom clones, anything from the quake/unreal era was something else entirely.

For the former there is nothing that has quite stuck in my mind as much as Star Wars Dark Forces -- I don't even much care for star wars (it is a thing, it was worth seeing for me but I am not sure it is mandatory these days and I have no objection if I never see any of them again) but I cared about that.

That would be followed closely by Duke 3d, maybe redneck rampage (though that is somewhere between the two eras I mentioned earlier) and I once played a kind of space sim that predated a lot of the online multiplayer but had several of the trappings of it.

For the later ones I do not much care for multiplayer games but Unreal tournament of some form. If only because of CTF Face ( http://unreal.wikia.com/wiki/CTF-Face ). Of course by this point Deus Ex had come on the scene so there is that.

Never really cared much (see star wars earlier but replace it with half life) for Half Life and most things in it, though Half Life wanted (a wild west themed mod) did well for me.

The only "classic" fps I've played was Star Wars Dark Forces. I voted other because it wasn't on the list. Wouldn't Golden Eye for the N64 be considered a classic?

My vote goes to the original Unreal. Best level design and music I've ever seen/heard.

Of what's in the poll, it would be a hard pick between quite a few of them, as they redefined of what an FPS actually was (I'm talking about wolfenstein 3D, doom, duke nukem 3D, half life and quake). Doom would win it...

(though I wonder what counterstrike is doing there. It had no levels to go through, and was more of a tournament style FPS, in the same vein as unreal tournament).

I'm normal ;__;

The fuck? I played Hexen for about an hour and didn't encounter any weapons whatsoever.

There were three classes, each with their own weapons (three or four for each class, IIRC). The fighter (iirc) started with just melee, which was pretty hard the first couple of hours*...but even that got at least one ranged weapon at the end.

*this depended on how well you knew the levels, as it required quite some backtracking.

For the record: I've never heard of marathon either. But if anything, descent should've been included rather than strife (another one I never knew :P ).

EDIT: if tournament FPS'es are to be included, I'd vote for UT or UT2004 as well. :)

Unreal Tournament all the way. Get a bunch of friends together and the original is still amazing, even to this day.

The only FPS I completed is Half Life.
I don't remember playing old classic FPS more than an hour.
I was more in dungeon exploration (eye of the beholder style) when playing First person games.

Doom : maybe 5 min
Duke nukem : probably the same
Blood : maybe an hour.

I played few times in 1vs1 on Golden Eye 64, but never the story mode.
The only FPS I completed are Half-life and Metroid Prime trilogy (technically, it's first person and you shoot) but it's not old classic.

both of which work well in potplayer
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
amd is a bit cheaper though
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Cheaper and they are less stingy with the RAM not a big issue now but I can imagine in a yard or two things might be different
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Year not yard lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Interesting lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb
    +1
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding
    +1
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow
