I've tried four different ones and to my surprise the absolute cheapest ones from china were by far the best.

I've tried all of those in the picture except the top left and top right ones. The skull & co grips don't have much grip at all. The kontrol freek ones are too big. The ones in the top middle I actually didn't even bother with after using the ones I linked you. They're the best size and the material - which I thought would absolutely suck because I tried the cheap chinese ones before - have very good grip. Just much better than the stock joycons. Just make sure you wipe them dry out of the box and dry your hands. You will be surprised how much better they are over the stock joycon thumbsticks. Not too wide either, just enough that it's more comfortable to play with.

How do you even apply a thumbstick grip on the 3ds? It's completely flat. I'll have to google it. The thought never even once crossed my mind. I'm only aware of the right nub psp joystick swap. Ah, maybe you can swap the 3ds left joystick for a psp one.

Yeah it's a really thin material that fits tightly over and underneath. They apparently had an earlier version where the 3ds didn't shut fully, but the newer ones are super thin.

Mine won't close completely because of my glass screen protector but I'm using two tiny stoppers for that so no problem. Can you link me to these new thumbstick protectors?
