Most notably, players can now purchase "shortcuts." This means with real currency players can nab several unlock packs. Here they are:
Kit Shortcut Bundle ($24.99) Unlocks all items unique to the four playable classes
Vehicle Shortcut Bundle ($17.99) Unlocks all vehicle upgrades
Assault Kit Shortcut ($6.99) Unlocks all items unique to the Assault class
Engineer Kit Shortcut ($6.99) Unlocks all items unique to the Engineer class
Support Kit Shortcut ($6.99) Unlocks all items unique to the Support class
Recon Kit Shortcut ($6.99) Unlocks all items unique to the Recon class
Air Vehicle Shortcut ($9.99) Unlocks all items for all air vehicles
Ground Vehicle Shortcut ($9.99) Unlocks all items for all ground vehicles
Co-op Weapons Shortcut ($4.99) Unlocks all weapons otherwise unlocked via co-op play
The Ultimate Bundle ($39.99) Unlocks all items from all other shortcut packs

I do not play Battlefield 3, but IMO this would be absolutely terrible if it came to any game I play (Not to mention very expensive). This definately gives in to the "Pay to Win" atmosphere most FtP MMROPG's have taken on. Next thing you know, there's going to be an instant "Unlock All" option in racing games heavily online and skill-to-unlock-things focused, then some way to "Shortcut" to all items and the end bosses in Zelda games. This is a massive downward trend imo.

There are kit shortcuts in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, also. This isn't a new concept. It's shortcuts for those who have cash and don't care/don't have the time to unlock everything, but still want to enjoy all of the other content. This is an FPS. It might have mattered when the game was new, but now, not so much.

Such astronomical prices for all this! Whoever had this thought did not think right.

I don't mind this type of dlc but man those prices. I've still wrecked shit with inferior loadouts but it depends a lot on the players skills (with that said I'm only decent with a tank). This would be great for if the rare chance I want to use a helicopter but I wouldn't pay for it. But then again, probably only the most desperate would pay those prices.

I remember a few years ago, I bought Call of Duty 4 some 1.5 years after it was released. Everyone on every server I was on was at the maximum level, and I felt severely handicapped. Nonetheless, I didn't give up and eventually made my way up to the top.

If back then, "shortcut" DLC packs were released for me to buy, would I have been suckered in to level myself with the rest of the players? No. No I wouldn't.

But hey, some other spineless prick would, so there you go

Battlefield 3 has been out since October 2011. Everyone who gives one about the online would've already unlocked it.

It's not pay2win, it's pay if you can't be bothered unlocking them.

I wish more games would let me skip playing through the pesky game part and just buy my way through. It's the way of the future!
