Hacking basic tips?

what else should I know before I recieve my r4 card I got the R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS if anyone has tips or basic info let me know

Usually, you just put the firmware files on your sdcard and copy over your nds games.

Id recommend using ys menu as it has a very good compatibility and a minimalistic ui which I like.
you can run emulators on ds with it, like gameyob for gb/c.
if you want, you can get legit backups of ds games you own with it. same for saves. same for gba games- with r4 and a ds or dslite you can get roms from real carts and the saves from them

Do games have to be placed in a certain folder amongst the files? Or will anywhere work?

They will work anywhere. I put them in the root of the sd card, but if you want to load emulators and homebrew, you might want to create directories. The sav file will be created in whatever directory the nds rom is in. If you decide to change the location of the nds rom, just be sure to put the sav file in the same location. It’ll load automatically.
