I'm currently using 51 characters as the maximum length for my ROM names, but I'm experimenting until I find the exact maximum length. However, it's annoying having to remove the card, rename the games, and then put it back in the Nintendo DS. I couldn't find this information anywhere online, so if anyone knows, share the maximum length for ROM names on your flashcards, regardless of brand, model, or firmware. I'm using the R4 Dual-Core (white/silver) with the official firmware from the R4i-sdhc website and don't plan on using a better firmware at the moment.

I've never ran into a limit, on any DS flashcart. I had all my roms with scene naming including numbers and never had an issue.

If you're not using subfolders, the FAT32 filesystem has a limit on the number of long file names you can store in the root directory.
