In the 80s, home computers, such as were made by Sinclair, Commodore, Amstrad, and so on, were much more popular than things like the NES.

That really put Nintendo's nose out of joint, and they have never truly forgiven Europe.

I buy my games and because of that I budget, research, and pick up what I think should be nice and that's maybe 1 a month, though I will just as easily grab a used title because of places like Gamestop where I have 7 days to determine if it sucks as they'll give my cash/credit back with no questions asked.

I could give a crap about moral high or low ground as I used to use copiers with the GB/C and then again with GBA, but I have yet to invest in a DS one though the R4 is looking like the best route. Even if I had one though I'd still buy what is good, though just like now probably on sale and/or used because if it's over $30USD it's a rip and in some cases over $20 is a joke. Thing is I like to own what I like which is the same reason why I'll never really buy into digital download much at all other than minigames and stuff like WiiWare has. If Sony's sick wet dream of reality came true of 90% of gaming being digital no real copy download by 2018 I'd retire as I refuse to give my rights up.

That's just...

You're original post says that you are disappointed about the releases of DS games because they are pieces of crap when you try them out.
Ok, you really buy commercial carts of DS games. And you got an R4 so you could test the games out before you could buy them? Cmon, is this true?

I think, the games you've seen to be crap are "third party" games, which are made by "third party developers", SquareEnix is one of those. You say you see games that are crap. If they are made by nintendo, or licensed by nintendo, they should not be that bad. If they are made by some unfamiliar and nameless company, stay away.

Nintendo's not hunting down flashcarts because they are greedy, they are running a business no matter how you look at it. If they dont sell enough from the game they wasted their money and sweat on, would they be making more games by now? Search the ECONOMIC'S LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

And instead of using the R4 or any other flashcart to "test" out the roms before you "buy" them, why not read reviews of the game? They usually have a comprehensive insight of the games. http://www.ign.com/

That's why smart people dont buy every single DS game. They research about an upcoming game, gets convinced by solid facts, and buy the game. Simple.

quote for truth. while i am a pirate, i still would buy games if i could. i just have a very, very, VERY short budget, so saved up and got an R4. i'd be legal if i could afford too.

also, relating to the last part of your post, i hate it when i'm at the video store renting movies with my friends, they pick movies just because the commercials are funny/good, they never do any research and always regret renting the movies, and i'm just like "told ya so, retards"

well anyways companies cannot hold grudges... really dont forget that its not good for both their public face and their income. French, German and British players are hardcore and if not satisfied thats a big LOAD of money lost for Nintendo... I go for taxes and costs to be honest. We dont even know what their supply chains look like in europe to assume its Nintendo's fault to have prices as such. And to be honest you cant hate Nintendo for other intermediaries. I hate the company that represents Nintendo in Greece (I am Greek and lived there till some months ago) but I never hated Nintendo it self... cmon its not that hard to understand is it? Unless thats what you want to believe, which being the case will be almost impossible to change your mind...

EDIT: +1 for the research arguement by the way.

Interesting replies so far guys.

I could try to list some of the "schlock" I suppose. But I tend to try to forget it, not focus on it
smile.gif

Ok a few examples. Paint DS, unmitigated crap. They held it back a year, what on earth for?
Aquarium DS. Might have not be so offended if they hadn't released Fantasy Aquarium at the same time. Those two titles are really just one title purposely spread into two games for no apparent justification.

Brain Age was stellar, but since Brain Age, it has been cloned to death. And several of the clones have been very shabby.

Pet games. I don't hate the games for their icky puppy luv nature. But there has been a bit too much cloning going on. And some of it is dreadfully shallow.

Some games appear as if the designer got bored and just didn't feel like completing the game. Command and Destroy looked promising until you realized it was barely there. It could have been great, instead it was uncooked.

I've read plenty of reviews (I do read reviews). A lot of games have been released, and the software was really just buggy. It wasn't the game idea, it was just poorly made product.
I've read where some games like the Card playing types are really just crummy games front to back. The only good part being the jacket art.

I've seen a few games based off well known names turn out to be turkeys. You can't just assume a brand name is a safe bet.
This is why I plan to buy what I consider to be money well spent, even if I DON'T actually neeeeed to spend money. Hey, I'm not trying to play some sort of paragon of virtue here. I only plan to buy games from companies where I consider the company something akin to a friend. I actually DO know the owners of some game companies.
Plus I have my pride, being cheap eventually gets on one's nerves.

Sometimes it's really just about wanting to get a demo. Sometimes you check out a game that you just are not sure of, and you get surprised to find you liked it AFTER you tried the download.

I've bought the retail instead of settling for a download in a few cases because I KNEW the game was going to be detailed enough I wanted the manual as well. This is rare though. Not many DS games require much explanation.

And, I DO live in a town that is lucky to get a new title in at all, let alone keep it in stock. If I wasn't on a rom site, seeing games that had come out, I often would never have heard of the game at all either.
It's to this forums credit by the way, that they make as much discussion as possible. I was beginning to wonder if there actually were even any decent gaming forums to be had for the DS etc etc etc. I wasn't having any luck finding one.

I can afford to buy a game a month (assuming I have any I want). I don't want to be doing it at random, among a list of games, where I have every reason to believe my success rate is 10% if I am lucky. Nope. I don't tell my local store how I come to decide what I want them to order in for me. I'm just happy I can give them a bit of honest business.
But I don't feel like contributing to their ever increasing stash of used games under glass

Why single out the DS? Just about every console in the history of gaming has had shovelware out number the quality titles. Most peoples game libraries are only a small fraction of the full library unless they are a hardcore collector or just try anything.

The only console I can think of that had a larger number of quality titles than crap was the Neo-Geo. I wouldn't expect people who don't care for fighters to agree, but for people that do, it was great. It also was mostly filled with one-genre, made by one publisher and it's development teams with a few -- very, very, few -- third parties and was too expensive for the average consumer.

I buy a game a month, and I don't see how you need more than that. Roms aren't for collecting. If you like the game during the 24 hours, delete and buy the original game and let companies know what's the good stuff.

Roms are a easy way to avoid buying bad games, but not buying games and collecting illegal roms is pretty bad.

So the basic issue here depends on the point of view of every single player on every single game released for the DS.

If YOU think those Pet games, or Brain games, or Strategy games havent served you entertainment, we couldnt say it did the same with other players.
Basically, Nintendo doesnt really listen to just 1 voice within 1 million voices. It takes surveys, or rates of interests and makes games they THINK would be FUN for the majority of players.

If a person says "Aw shit, Pokemon D/P is still a piece of crap! SHouldnt have bought this!", it doesnt mean the others say the same thing.

In my opinion, yes, many games havent served me entertainment, but still most of the games i had are worth my time.

I'm not really sick of them, but t hey make waiting for the quality games harder. I guess they just make me hope that the AAA games are *that* much better.

Neo-geo machine was an 'Arcade Console', it was a specialist machine. Yes they were many fighting games but not much else, Metal Slug being the exception too. In the U.K. at the time, it was about GBP200.00 for one game cartridge. I liked variety more, and a wallet; so I chose the AtariST & Amiga. Nintendo use to have the 'Seal of Quality' for earlier games such as for the Super Nintendo. Nintendo has thrown this away since and allowed any rubbish to appear on there consoles, namely the Wii & DS. Nintendo have realised there flaw and are now in the business for the money. You can also say 'thank you' to the Playstation for bringing 'Mass marketing' to the gaming world.

Hmmmm... I see your point, why, I DID think exactly what you're thinking about. Lotsa game sfor DS sucks, take for example Assassin's Creed. Nintendo itself doesn't always produce good games. Take Hotel Dusk for example. The gameplay is pretty good, but the story is really bad.

BUT, it's all the past. Maybe you're just like me back then. Gotten too used with consoles. NDS is a good device, sure, but consoles were better. For many years we gamers always play good console games, whether it in terms of graphic or story, or sound, since consoles got better limitations than DS. try to understand that what in front of you is not PlayStation, it is Nintendo Dual Screen, with it's advantages and disadvantages. Nowadays' DS games are better than before, 'course they can't force great graphics like they did with Assassin Creed, which makes it VERY bad, but they can provide games with story or interface. Touchscreen is the trademark of NDS, not VGA Card, so NDS games tried to make good use of it. touch interactions usually comes in short time, like 10-15 secs, and that's why touch-screen-capable games aren't usually complemented with long story or something, usually they're for quickplay, take Nintendogs for example, and BrainAge did the job too

NDS games weren't bad, maybe you're just expecting high-quality games in DS, although some really were bad. Genre cloning does seem to be a trend nowadays. Brain and Pet games seems to flood the market, there's not much variations in NDS games, and that might bring NDS down a bit.
