It was Mario's 40th anniversary. In addition, they released a new hardware this year. So they should've announced a new game for the Mario IP.

Meanwhile, we got Mario Galaxy 1/2 ports lacking any meaningful new content, along with a DLC for Bananza which obviously was meant for the initial release.

I suppose that the only actual new Mario is the Mario Galaxy movie...

The Pokemon Pokopia game, new Fire Emblem, and Danganronpa 2x2 are more than enough for me. It felt a little underwhelming for what is one of if not the longest Directs of all time, but whatever. That's more excitement than I normally feel for a Direct lately.

True, but it just feels like your average Direct and that Nintendo just slapped the anniversary on as an afterthought. Mario was supposed to get the spotlight, and yet that IP probably got the least new stuff.

I dunno, I was pretty content in terms of Mario. The best 2D game is getting DLC and a Switch 2 upgrade (it FINALLY will have bosses??), Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 in 4K officially is nice, new Mario Tennis with an adventure mode is something I’ll look forward to, and then DK DLC and a really great looking Yoshi game.

Going past Mario, Pokémon Quest Builders looks incredible, Legends ZA DLC sounds fun, new Fire Emblem, Danganronpa, a bunch of Switch 2 Upgrades, Dynasty Warriors Origins coming to S2 (seriously don’t sleep on this one if you haven’t played it elsewhere!). And let’s not forget the mad man Sakurai getting ANOTHER Kirby Air Riders direct in the future. The sway he has to get these showcases is awe inspiring lol.

It was a really great Direct for me.

Tht Virtual Boy announcement felt like an out-of-season April fools joke. Seriously, why require an extra mount if that's one of the two reasons the original hardware flopped hard? The Labo mount they showed is a step in the right direction, but unless they actually make it optional, I'll just accept that I'm too lazy to set up an emulator on my phone and therefore won't ever play a Virtual Boy game during my lifetime.

Also, pulling an Activision move and announcing DLC for a game that hasn't come out yet is just disgusting.

Also also, when I said previously that I didn't want this to be more Sakurai stroking his ego, I didn't expect that they would actually announce another Kirby Air Riders Direct.

It's not like all of this Direct was bad (MP4 looked nice and Tomodachi Life is definitely on my list), but Nintendo didn't make too good of an impression this time.

Yes. None of my expectations for Mario's 40th anniversary happened, and my expectations weren't even that high. It was nothing but rehashed games, and very little new.

$70 HD ports for an 18 and 15 year old game. $25 dollar piece of cardboard with lenses - with the option of a PLASTIC version  for $100. all of these better come with a blowjob to warrant these prices.

Wait, did Super Mario World or Bros. 3 get a DLC and I missed it??

Jokes aside, it was a pretty average direct, not too bad, nothing great either.
It's hard to get hyped for DLC, and all shown games were either meh at best or released elsewhere.
We need much more exclusives to justify the console's existence, ports area hardly a thing to celebrate when PCs exist.

At least I got something much better for my upcoming 40th birthday: A $5k PC!

I stand by Wonder surpassing them, it's the most fun I've had with 2D Mario. I won't disagree World and SMB3 are fantastic though, and I can certainly understand those being the series high for others.

Nintendo patented the whole "Summoning" thing made the Pokopia game amusing especially the comments. Fire Emblem and Mega Man starforce was good. Not really a disappointing direct unless the only thing you play are Nintendo games. I've got Super Mario Wonders but I have no desire in paying for additional DLC. Same with Kirby

I will say the Yoshi game looks neat and Pokemon Crossing (aka Pokopia) looks mildly interesting. Not sure why they didn't think to make Animal Crossing but with Pokemon until now, it just makes sense.

Mario Galaxy themed movie is cool I guess. Not expecting anything amazing but should be a decent watch.

The rest of it was incredibly mid. Just the usual things that *every* Direct seems to have (every Direct seems to have some Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem announcement), more ports, even more ports, and new Metroid 4 trailer.

I wasn't particularly excited by it but I'm more into Zelda and Metroid than Mario. There weren't any new games or DLC announced for these series. The Donkey Kong Jamboree DLC does look nice though. I'm still waiting years for Switch 2 overclocking to become a reality before playing it.

IIRC the last few anniversarys consisted of emulated games, so this doesn't surprise me.

We also got the new DK game, so that may have filled the slot of a potential Mario game.

I never expect to be wowed by a whole direct, so I wasn't disappointed overall, there are a few things I'm happy about, like Galaxy 2 (even for Switch 1), Yoshi (that's gonna be the one that I have to get a Switch 2 in time for, tho maybe I'll try sooner for better versions of some other games), even the fruit game sequel. I'll take the Virtual Boy stuff as a novelty, guessing it should work with the cheap Chinese knockoff Labo headset I already have. Spouse is hyped for Tomadachi Life and that cute new Pokémon thing, so it was pretty good for us overall.

The disappointment for me was the lack of Metroid Prime 2 & 3. I'm tempted to put on the full clown makeup and say there's still time for a shadow drop during an MP4-focused stream closer to the release date (which is still the best part of 3 months away, and I think it would make the timing closer to what they did with the Pikmin older games), but I can always play them on ye olde Wii U.

I thought that the new Nintendo policy with the release of switch 2 was quite clear after they added their new favorite character to Mario Kart World..."MILKING THE COW" .... specially since is not that new... they have been selling "new games" that are just remasters (sometimes just simple ports) of the older games from Wii/Wii-U and so all the switch's lifecycle... why would they change it now... the only difference for them is now they can charge more for each "remaster" ...
