Any recommended (but cheap) retro handhelds?

I have a family member visiting this Christmas who I seldom see, I already have his main gift but I was thinking of picking one of these up as a secondary gift.

Ideally I'd like something which can run up to the PS1 or at a minimum the MD/Amiga 1200 which he grew up with.

I've never really looked into these before since I have alternatives, looking around I've seen the R36S for ~£20-40 (my target price), although I've heard this is bad for PS1.

Any other options I should consider?

Ended up getting an R36s as I got it for £20.

Since there's no responses mods are free to lock/delete the topic.

Maybe the SUP/N-brand M3, and it gets better once you install miyoo cfw on it

I would have recommended the R36S and told you to load this custom Firmware on a new/quality SD card: https://github.com/AeolusUX/ArkOS-R3XS
You will have no deal-breaking issues with PS1 and can even have fun with some higher end stuff in moderation like Dreamcast for example. It also will then support PortMaster with ArkOS. See here is you're unfamiliar with what PortMaster brings to the table: https://portmaster.games/
