ummm yeah get avg 8.0 the pro version i heard that

some video hosting websites such as YOUTUBE and daily motion have info on how top get a "free trial" the 4th cake is very nice

kaspersky is the best anti virus out there, its like, £20 a year for updates, has a nice interface, and it very effective. All the pc mags I have read recomend it, (psst, you can pirate it)

urg, norton, it is worse than a virus, in fact it is practically a virus itself.

then again, so is windows

Anyway, if i were you and you have no idea what and how specifically anti viruses work, then go for Nod 32 *google* it

Avast, it does its job and it does it well, but the free version lacks a firewall, and i have no idea why anyone would want to use the default windows so be sure to install a good firewall as well.

Kaspersky is the way to go...

Fast updates
Great community (forum)
Relatively cheap
Awesome interface
Proved to have the best hacker protection

...and so on.

well, think about it, a virus:
1) gets on your computer without you putting it there (as does windows)
2) makes your computer slower than it should be (as does windows)
3) sends and receives information without you asking it to (as does windows)

If you ain't going to pay, the decent options for background scanners are pretty much AVG and Avast!. AntiVir lost that race back a few years ago.

And if you are going to pay, try F-Secure Internet Security or Panda Internet Security.

But unless you go with a full suite, you need an anti-spyware (Spybot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft Ad-Aware), anti-rootkit (F-Secure Blacklight) and a firewall (ZoneAlarm being the only one surviving my connections, unfortunately).

NOD32 is the best in terms of performance, and IMO, virus protection, and it's supposed to work well against other kinds of malware. If you want to pirate it there's a Chinese site where you can get username and passwords for it, if it stops downloading updates, just go there and use a new combo and that will last a few weeks. COMODO I heard is the best firewall both paid and free.

EDIT: Wait you have the Tux as your avatar... why are you not using Linux?

so long as its just the NORMAL type!!!!

Thanks Mom!

Is there a comparison chart or something for all these AV's?

Not any good comparison charts. Starting 2009 I would be willing to do a nice chart I also have a project I want to start that could be very good in comparing the anti viruses. I just need to figure out how to put it together.

NOd32 blows. It updates only once a day and, although the small filesize, it eats my resources up. It takes forever to load, loading onto the foreground! wtf.

I'm very happy with my BitDefender total security 2009, thank you very much!

Edit: Malwarebytes software is the best to remove malware!

I use NOD32.

Disable the option for splash screen and it will load in the background.

And do you really NEED it to update more than once a day?

What makes you say that? AFAIK Antivir is one of the best Anti-Virus programms out there. It being free is just a nice bonus.

FYI, Norton, for example, actually used to be good a few years ago. I have fond memories of using Norton utilities on DOS, especially Norton Commander, but also their Defrag tools, etc. The times, they are a-changing...

Disclaimer: I use Linux and I have a functioning brain, I don't need Snake Oil Anti-Virus.
