If you're tight, like me, try Avira AntiVir.

Awesome Anti-Virus program, the database in the free version is identical to the paid 'Pro' version.

Did anyone suggest Hitman pro 3?
Only problem it is not free.

Bullguard is not free too.

Avira Antivir says nearly everything is a virus (sometimes its good)

Norton
ok

Nod32
Very good

There was another one that big companies use i can't remember the nake but it takes out 99,0% of all virus!!

Personally, I think Kaspersky Anti-Virus is awesome. It updates its signatures whenever they are reported so that you can be protected against the latest viruses. Only problem is that certain malwares can get through (such as the rouge anti-virus Spyware Guard 2008 or something). This infected my computer once and luckily I had Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. This is an awesome anti-malware program that is absolutely free! Try it out.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus: Free trial, but after that, must pay.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Absolutely free.

If you ain't going to pay, the decent options for background scanners are pretty much AVG and Avast!. AntiVir lost that race back a few years ago.
What makes you say that? AFAIK Antivir is one of the best Anti-Virus programms out there. It being free is just a nice bonus.

FYI, Norton, for example, actually used to be good a few years ago. I have fond memories of using Norton utilities on DOS, especially Norton Commander, but also their Defrag tools, etc. The times, they are a-changing...

Disclaimer: I use Linux and I have a functioning brain, I don't need Snake Oil Anti-Virus.

AntiVir got bought some years back, and after that they got steamrolled into making their free antivirus a nonstop ad spammer, in addition to the quality of their antivirus part dropping sharply in the following months.

Norton used to be good, but that isn't "few years". You're talking about more than a decade. Getting a bit old there eh?

Do not rely only on antivirus alone. The best defence along with commonsense is a layered one. Use antivirus plus generic behavior monitors like Appdefend or system safety monitor as well as Regdefend, Spywareblaster. Spywareguard, Spybot search & destroy etc.

I recommend you do some reading to find out how these work and how to use them but something tells me you will not be doing that until a virus destroys all of your porn for ever.

I had that 2009 antivirus pop up thing. I think its a trojan? mm idk. Well AntiVir couldn't get rid of it, it kept asking me to remove it, and after i clicked delete or something, it popped back up again. I got rid of it with Malwarebytes' anti malware.

if you get viruses as much as you say you do , then avg is doing its job so get:

AVG 8.0 and update it from here

its off cnet, but fully legit (it was a link from the free.avg.com website.)

And Spybot - Search & Destroy from here and click "download now"

make sure you update them at least once a week,(i try to update them everyday).

hope it helps

Seriously, AntiVir usually finishes quite good in comparisons. Here and here are two recent ones I could find. Also a lot of the Geeks at Slashdot recommend it, they of all should now if AntiVir really went down the drain.

Sure, you could call their ad for AntiVir Pro that comes up each time the definitions get updated (which is, usually, once a day) a bit offensive, but IMHO this isn't enough to justify calling AntiVir a "nonstop ad spammer".

Disclaimer: I don't get paid to defend AntiVir and I'm a sole Linux user for two years now, so I have no stakes in this.

Yes, Antivirus 2009 is malware, but Windows XPs/Vistas built-in malware removal tool should get rid of that pest. You should update your OS if you've switched off automatic updates. Here's an interesting read concerning that programm.

Well in my experience AntiVir - while doing detection well - had begun taking more power, spamming the ads every time I reboot, returning plenty of false positives and being useless in removal - wasn't the antivirus it used to be.
