“Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August.”

Except at launch when no Xbones are dev kits.

"Wait, hold on, slow down.....SONY WE'RE CATCHING UP WE REALLY ARE!!!!" It smacks of something that's been implemented at the 11th hour in order to try and redeem lost ground.

My thoughts exactly... and when they don't deliver, I'm betting they will offer the SDK as DLC for $$$ on Xbox Live.

If this is true, and most of all, if this will be cheap enouth, It will be the first time that we will have a XBOX console that supports homebrew. This may be the best XBone news until now.

Edit: I'm still not buying it :p

Even if the dev kit functionality is tied to a subscription, like the $99/year for XNA Creator's Club membership there was for the 360, that's still peanuts compared to spending like, $30k for a PS2 dev kit.

I have my doubts. There will be ridiculous barriers at some point, like, to activate dev kit mode, you have to pay a license fee of a few thousand dollar, or everything you do will automatically move through the cloud to give microsoft the chance to inspect it and shut down your license in case your code somehow violates a 500 page agb... and such.

Wow. Haters really are going to hate.

Put your cynicism and negativity aside for a minute. Unbunch your panties and try and look at this with an unbiased eye.

Tempers are constantly bemoaning the lack of homebrew support on (insert console/handheld name here). Now Microsoft say that's going to
be available on Xbox One and all anyone can do is bitch about it. Why not wait and see before casting judgement.

The last time there was such open homebrew support (that I remember) for a home video game console was the Playstation Yaroze, and the entry fee there was substantially
higher than a regular Graystation.

Even that I'm optimistic with this, all that Microsoft did on recent past justify all this skepticism (or scepticism, sorry my grammar). By the end of august everything will be more clear I think

But this isn't open homebrew support. This is simply stating that devs don't need to buy a separate dev kit from the retail unit.

Don't the Xbone Dev Kits come with 12 gb of RAM? If that's the case, how do they compensate for that? Don't get me wrong, it's a nice touch from Microsoft (if sorely late to the party), but I'm a bit skeptical about how well this will actually work.

Now, Microsoft, if you could just remove the Kinect and cut down that price, we might actually get somewhere.

1- Designed for always online DRM
2- DRM removed in a rush
3- Something like OtherOS
4- A cracker actually buys this
5- ????????
6- Profit!

Not sure of the definition of "DevKit", but hasn't quite a few consoles in the past been capable of running some kind of Dev mode?

As for the news itself, kudos to MS. Now they'll have an "app store" for indie devs. Sure some of the homebrew will be diamond quality, but I can imagine that MS will never allow emulators and the likes that allow ROM loading. On a console trying to sell MS stuff.

I wonder how many MS employees' hair is on fire thanks to all the back pedaling and adding stuff to the floundering after E3.
So basically this makes the Xbone indy friendly?

By the same token using the PSM environment all PS Vita's are dev units...
