How do you set the name of certain 3ds game backups. For example, some show up with the proper name in the gateway OSD such as "Cave Story 3D", but another shows up as "v-mh3u.3ds".

Changing the file name is impractical because it will still show ".3ds"

The way the ROMs are shown when you hit select is based on what the ROMs are named, themselves. Of course they have to end in the .3ds extension, but, as far as how they will display and how they are sorted by FAT-sorter, that goes strictly off of the file name. Rename it to Cave Story 3D and run FAT-sorter.

I have games that show the proper name, not based off of their filename. For example my "v-mk7.3ds" file shows up as Mario Kart 7. The only one I'm having issues with is my monster hunter backup.

is it a japanese rom?
nvm i just searched....idk

My "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.3ds" showed the .3ds extension as well, it just uses the internal game name as specified by the ROM and, if something goes wrong, it uses the filename.

Oddly, Castlevania shows up as 'Mirror of Fate', but is categorized under the letter 'C'. Disney's Epic Mickey - Power of Illusion comes up as simply 'Power of Illusion,' but it appears under the letter 'D'.

Spider-Man - Edge of Time appears as "SM: EOT", while Link Between Worlds appears as 'The Legend of Zelda', and that's it.

Those are the only odd naming conventions I have seen so far.

The order is solely based on the time they were written to the card, and not the filename, right?

So even if it does show as Mirror of Fate instead of Castlevania, you could just use FAT Sorter to put it with the C's?

I don't have my Gateway in-hand at the moment so I can't test it out myself but I'm planning to do so next week to see if I can figure out the ROM title thing... from reading these posts I'm guessing it's looking to a certain area in the ROM and if it can't locate it there, it will use the filename instead.

i noticed the font/text was really bad looking in the multi rom menu so i wanted to see how it would handle japanese characters (also chinese, korean etc) so i dumped a japanese game i had and yeah it just showed the file name. maybe it happens for a english language game i have too, i forget...

Saturosia is right, It uses the game short name text from the SMDH icon (ICN file).

Here is screenshot of the "Castlevania - Mirror of Fate" SMDH ICN file:

you can see the short name (under description) just has "Mirror of Fate"
where as the long name (under DECIMAL VALUE) is "Castlevania: Lords of ShadowMirror of Fate)

The other games Neo Draven mentioned also have different short name text compared to the long name text.

The Monster Hunter 3 short name is "MH3U", so maybe if the short name is shorter then 5 characters
gateway shows the filename?? (if the short description text is blank it shows the filename too)
(edit: "Myst" (0272/0440) has a 4 character English short name, anyone want to see if this shows the filename only too?)

I've noticed that if the rom filename starts with an underscore character then it won't show up on the games list (just a small bug with gateway game selector)
