i think you can get the gifts out in the inventory screen, but not in the mailbox

Yeah, basically you are able to open your mailbox, then xfer them to your inventory screen. You'll have to open up your inventory screen separately to open presents/etc.

This question is kind of noobish.

Just close your mailbox after receiving the letters. Close it. Go in your inventory. Click your letters. Clcik the letter with the gift. And click "Present".

You can't extract the presents while you're in your mail box.
