Let's say, hypothetically, I unpacked a game file, which contained some kind of easily exploitable private data, e.g. passwords. If I reported this to the dev, would I get busted under some DMCA law?

I'm no doctor, but i think it would depend on a few things.

A. What type of "game" are we looking it? Was this a PC game? A console game?

B. Did you put money down on the game? Is it downloaded? Is it flash or commercial?

C. Is the file you're looking at... was it included with the game? Is it a patch? Is it a mod?

Depending on those answers will really help figure out the outcome.

Here are your answers:
1) Console.
2) It's a legally downloaded, licensed app published by the console mfg.
3) It's one of the application's core archives, obtained by a FileSystem dump.
