I am not so familiar with the full story of this one but have seen bits and pieces over the years.

Does this mean the stuff shared in magazines and stage demos that has been sort of removed* from the final game (time, budget, various reasons given), and otherwise seen various fan reconstructions?

*being a 16 bit era game you tended not to delete things and recompile as much as note the space as not being used and block the normal means of access in the game itself, the data however still being there within the game itself.
