I know the 3DS can connect to WPA/WPA2 networks, but can I use those networks for older DS games like Pokemon Black or Mario Kart?

Connexion types that were not supported by the original DS are not supported by the 3DS for DS games.
In fact, it also keeps the old interface to arrange the connexion of your DS games.

To be clearer still, Pokemon black will on a REAL cart... flash carts still play games in DS mode (not DSi mode). No card currently plays in DSi mode on 3DS.

Wait, so no matter what Flash Cart you use, you cant use Wi-Fi on the 3DS?
You can use WEP or no security.
While the Cyclo iEvolution allows DSi mode which should allow WPA security, DSi mode is non-functional on the 3DS, and only DSi-enhanced or DSi games can use WPA.

DS games use WEP or no security, period.

Or am i misunderstanding, and your referring to certain Connection Types
No no, they meant connection types.

DS games on the 3DS will only support WEP or no security.

DSi / 3DS games on the 3DS will support WPA as well.
