So I managed to get a new 3ds XL at 9.2. Sweet!
There's a catch though. If the brightness is at 5 (or higher than 1, haven't tested it and can't test it anymore) the 3ds just totally shuts off. It might display the screen for a bit, but it just shuts off instantly with a pop.

When I inserted an SD card that has never been inside it before, it magically worked again, and was at the first brightness level. Is there any way whatsoever to restore brightness level 1 so that it stops shutting down, or am I just basically screwed, and have to open it up and fix it myself?

I think maybe some screen ribbon is broke or something I guess...
Did you already open the console?
Try to use NTRBootMode3 and use the brightness option, is more useful than the damn New 3DS brightness. I always have turned off auto-brightness. (Don't update, 'cause you don't want to lose your brightness option, right?! RIGHT?!)

I have no means of getting into the main menu. It'll show up for a split second and then instantly disappear. The console has not been hacked at all.

EDIT: Time limit preventing me from posting. I don't have access to a charger at the moment but will get one tomorrow and report back. I believe it was the same thing though when the previous owner still had this issue.

Is there any way whatsoever that I can edit my SD card to change the settings?

Oops sorry. I think there must be a broken ribbon I guess?

Even charging the console with brightness 5 the console still turns off?

Also I know the ribbon isn't TOTALLY broken. It worked perfectly fine when the brightness was at 1. Is there any way to reset the brightness from my SD card or something? It has to be related to my SD card, because it booted at the lowest brightness when I put in some random one in.

That setting is saved to the NAND and not the SD card, just tested.
Does sound like a screen issue. Can't return it?

Could also be a weak battery, maby. Try with the PA.

Huh, weak battery does sound like a good bet. I'll take the battery out and see if I can get my hands on the charger. I'll run it from the charger only and see what happens, and get back to you guys tomorrow.

Boy do I feel stupid
So I uh...

I took apart the 3DS XL? Well. That was a huge fuckin mistake, because now I can't put it back together. The cables are too weird and I don't wanna take apart the top screen, but they're so small and short I think I might have to. Should I just ship it into Nintendo for repairs at this point?
