So, I think my brother's DS broke so he'll want to buy a 3DS. I was thinking that I'll give him my 3DS and I'll buy a 3DS XL. But is the the XL worth it? And if I do a system transfer, what happens to my save?

PS: Sorry if this has been posted before.

If you mean retail games, then they will be there as the saves are on the cartridge. If there's anything you bought from the eShop, then you just put the SD card of your old 3DS into your new one after the system transfer and everything will be back to normal, and yes, even saves of digital content/games.

I've never owned a 3DS but I can say that the 3DS XL is such an awesome upgrade from a DS Lite. As for system transfer, once you initiate the system transfer from the settings, everything from the old 3DS will move over to the new one. After that, all you have to do is take the SD card from the old 3DS and put it into the new 3DS XL. I'm sure someone will correct me but I think the save data for digital copies of games are stored on the SD card itself.

I have had both a 3DS and 3DSXL and I honestly could not go back to the 3DS from my XL, everything looks so much better, the size makes it easier on the eye and the controls are much easier on my hands too. If you have the extra money to be able to afford the XL then I would definitely go for it.

Also the game saves for digital games will be transferred over along with the digital games without issue and all cartridge games have the save on the actual cartridge so there should not be any issues there.

Personally I think the 3DSXL feels really cheap and flimsy compared to the 3DS and the DS lite. Always feels like I'm going to flick my wrist the the screen is going to snap off.

Everybody and their grandmother likes the XL versions of the systems better.

Since this is the handheld market we're talking about though isn't it pretty much inevitable that another 3DS model will be released? I guess the two key questions are when and if battery life will feature a significant upgrade.

As much as I am a Nintendo fan the fact that there isn't a user replaceable battery bothers me to end. So maybe for a new 3DS model we could get a user replaceable battery, or bare minimum one with a battery life increase of a few hours.

As someone who recently upgraded to an XL, I have to disagree with you. I had an early 3DS that I bought about 2 months after launch, and the XL in comparison feels much more sturdy and has a lot of minor upgrades to the hardware, such as:
  • An extra screen locking position
  • A click-on/off 3D slider which makes it really easy to precisely set the 3D to minimum without switching it off
  • Better stylus placement
  • A non-creaky d-pad
  • Proper buttons for select, home and start
  • A matte shell that doesn't look like crap from fingerprints after 30 seconds of play.
To name a few. Nothing about the 3DS XL feels cheap in my opinion, but perhaps that's just because I've had a lot of hands-on time with both the XL and standard model. The only reason I would encourage a standard model over the XL is if you carry the console around in your pocket a lot. The XL isn't very comfortable in that respect unless you have really huge pockets.

I went from an old DSPhat to a 3DSXL last month. Compared to that it was a hell of an upgrade. Same general size but a lot more screensize.

Unless you're a stickler for things being ridiculously portable I'd take the XL over the standard. It feels just the right size to me.

XL by far. I hated the 3DS's design because the edges jutted into the palm frequently. The 3DS XL got rounded edges and just feels that much better.

All you had to do to avoid the square edges was get a crystal shell or one of those rubberized skins to round out the edges.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
