I'm currently trying to install the CFW through the guides of 3ds.guide. I am at the last step finalizing the setup, section II - Updating the system. Is this step supposed to be performed in the main settings menu of the 3DS or is there a certain start up sequence that need to be performed with which you go in seperate menu?

Just make sure you are connected to the internet, go to Settings, Other Settings, System Update. Wait until it downloads the update and installs. After the reboot you will be on 11.4.

i have dns on auto, and tried multiple times but get an error.

"An error has occured. Unable to update. The system will now restart"
It does this before even getting 1 percent.

Any tips?

Can you confirm the internet is working by opening the browser?

Also the guide says:
Update your device by going to System Settings, then “Other Settings”, then going all the way to the right and using “System Update”
  • Updates while using B9S + Luma (what you have) are safe
  • If this gives you an error, set your DNS settings to “auto”
  • If this still gives you an error and your NAND is below 9.2.0, follow 9.2.0 CTRTransfer, then try updating again

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite
    for people with beefy hands.
