    Hello,
I recently purchased a N3DSXL and will be downgrading it to run fw 9.2 and i also have the GW. I have a few questions that i have been searching but cannot find solid answers for.

If i want to run emulators do i need to run CFW? Can i run it without?

If required, i'm looking at installing Luma3DS (will this work)?

If I was to use both sysnand and emunand, what gets installed first?

Regarding Luma3DS, there is a post "https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/", which has got me thinking. If i have 9.2 does CFW modify the current sysnand fw or does it replace it to a completely different version (depending on the base of the cfw).

    Many Thanks.

you dont need cfw to run emulators, these can be installed in gateway mode using apps like fbi installer.

i know gateway are behind with emunand support because they are working on a new big update.

so question is, do you want to run cfw and risk being banned or just want a nice safe way to boot gateway and roms and install emulators?

if your not bothered about online then boot gateway and copy a cia installer ( in .3ds format boot as a rom and install it) then when you boot gateway you can run the emu from your home screen.

Many Thanks Retroboy. So i think i got it.
Put FBi Installer as a 3ds rom into the Red card and just run it. Then install the the emulators in using the CIA files?

I'm not bothered about online and the only reasons why i thought of CFW is because no matter where i look it keeps saying "CFW can run emulators".

Actually Gateway Mode is a form of CFW, so they're correct.
You might want to install the .cia version of FBI as well, it makes things easier.

GW has a cheat system that some people prefer over NTR, and it's also more convenient to drag/drop .3DS ROMs onto a microSD Card rather than having to install CIAs.

That said, I still prefer free CFW over GW any day.

You have to be careful using Gateway because doing certain things will brick you or leave you with an updated system and no hack, whereas they won't using free CFW. This is because Gateway is closed source and only has a small team whereas free CFW is open source and has loads of people looking at it and finding the bugs and fixing them. It is a LOT safer to use free CFW unless you do a lot of reading and make sure you don't do anything that could cause you problems on Gateway. Even if Gateway was free, free CFW would be recommended over them just from the safety aspect.

plus gateway doesnt require modding your actual console (other than if it need downgrading) and its in a sense cost effective to simply drag/drop a rom to an sd card rather than copy a cia and make sure you have room for installs.

It doesn't matter if the homebrew used is CFW or Brickway, it voids your warranty and EULA.

Well actually, Gateway is reliant on the same entrypoints CFW is reliant on. You boot Gateway through various methods CFW does, including A9LH, B9S (not officially supported but there's a tutorial on doing it), Menuhax/Browserhax, and MSET ROP (DS Profile).

The rest of the files are on the SDs, games on the red card and CFW on the SD in the system.

The advance of b9s and cfw is you can use it with sysnand on updated version in (11.4) and don't need extra space for emunand.
With Gateway you can only use up to 11.2 because it don't support 11.3 and 11.4

I also own a Gateway-Cards but only for using cheats in the past that doesn't worked on ntr but now there is no need anymore because the cheats i use all work with ntr and more.

Wow, very informative. Thanks everyone! Yeah, i don't mind CFW but there are times where i can't be bother with all the extra steps required. Also, the banwave forum got me worried.

Extra steps? If you're on 11.3 or lower, it's quick. If you're on 11.4, extra steps are required there.

I haven't been banned yet, but it seems to be affecting users whether or not they're using CFW. There are unbanning methods, but I would take the safety steps first. You can see the safety steps on the news post regarding the banwave. After that, install CFW.

Then it's probably a good thing you actually have BOTH as they're not mutually exclusive options. Running B9S + GW on 11.2. Everything works, including online via ctr-httpwn and I have the best of both worlds.
