Hmm well this got me thinking. I bought another 3ds to be able to access eshop but now a possible 7.xx exploit...I think I might just stay at this firmware lol.

Plus I have a 4.5 for gateway as well. Backups son lol

Are we sure that smea limited us, because I thought it was just because the exploit was user mode.

The limitation being referred here is that smea won't ever release anything related to the 4.x exploit. While he has some genuine reasons for withholding the release (such as enabling piracy for free), a major side effect is that from unlimited hacking potential it becomes severely limited hacking potential.

Kinda like the Stem Cells controversy.

So.......what's gonna happen now? Is the 3DS hacking scene dead in the water more so than it is now? Because it sure as heck seems like it. Seems like it's deader now.

Far from it. There's real actual progress. Just not the one that really defines hacking as a whole.

The recent 6.x exploit just allows for... "homebrew loader" apparently. Kind of like 3DS flashcarts "rom loader". It's singular in purpose and usage.

It's less than ideal but better than nothing.

Well, I stand corrected :D

I guess my daughter updating her 2ds yesterday was a bad play.
On a side note, total noob here, whats the potential here?
Is it worthwhile to go to a mom n pops and grab a 3ds now?
Can I play 3ds backups and whats the status on nes/snes emulation?

Smeal did not create the exploit that has user mode access and intentionally limited us to user mode. It's a mistake in coding that Nintendo was responsible for and Smealum simply found it. It's not like he intentionally limited it. Don't like it? Well then find another exploit on your own then. :P

I'm not complaining that he can't find a better exploit, that's just fucking stupid. I'm complaining because he's basically ditching the <4.5 exploit scene for this shitty new exploit only because he's against piracy (AKA, he's against progress).

I don't have to find a new exploit, we already have the 4.5 one.

Even if it's not a total-encompassing exploit, it being more widely understood and available can help others discover new exploits or launchers into the system.

But GBAtemp is not the place for such discussion. 15 pages of this thread, and countless throughout the board's existence, show such.

No idea, no one really knows if this is going to be released due to certain fears of abuse. I'd love to see Snes as much as the next guy :P

Well. Snes is an emulator. Emulator plays roms. Roms aren't legal unless you own the physical game and even then its legality is questionable. So by the extension of "not wanting to contribute to piracy", emulators are a no no.

Would the exploit work with a 2ds on 6.3, or is it like the psp with only the earlier hardware fully exploitable?

It's a software exploit. So I would presume it would work on a 2DS.

However, details regarding what can be done with the 6.x exploit is scarce so don't go buying 6.x consoles in the hopes of rom playback.

Have you read the article smealum posted?
Take a quick look and you see he says he definetly is going to release it,
he's not only releasing it now because he still hopes to use this exploit on 7.1+,
and releasing it now would burn that possibility.

Why don't you take a look at my previous post?
Piracy or not, emulators are just a special kind of homebrew,
they won't need kernel access and therefore could be used with smealum exploit.
Again, smealum already comfirmed he will release his exploit,
which makes clear he's only worried about 3DS games piracy.

I know the PSP's Daedalusx64 required kernel access. No idea about this though. You've also got to remember that such an emulator would need to be created in the first place, and isn't very likely to release anytime soon. I doubt the 3DS could run SNES very well, anyhow.
