2K Games has just announced the formation of a brand new game development studio: Cloud Chamber. Split between two teams in California and Quebec, Canada, the company has been tasked with creating the next entry in the BioShock series. The previous installment, BioShock: Infinite, released back in 2013, to wide acclaim. Kelley Gilmore will be overseeing Cloud Chamber and the upcoming BioShock title as the studio head, having previously worked on series such as Civilization and XCOM. There is no release timeframe for the new BioShock game, though it is very early on, and is planned to be in development for the “next several years”.

Yes. That's why everyone praises it.

Haven't played it myself but I did see a bunch of reviews and 6 months later think pieces from people that I otherwise usually align with on games that noted Bioshock Infinite's slow pace and initial buildup, lack of choice, too many obvious scripted pieces, poor characterisation/poor narrative framing and somewhat buggy nature (not sure if this ever got fixed), and this also followed the less than stellar second outing. People that were avowed fans of the various system shocks also noted it further departure from the core concepts of that franchise that Bioshock was set to be the spiritual successor for.

Or if you prefer would you use Infinite as a template for someone making a new entry in the franchise, be it the sole template or a "play the earlier ones if you will, but this is the one" type deal?

Many of those genuinely enjoy games and what they have to offer as entertainment and are not just cynical/critical all the time. To that end I am inclined to believe them when they note serious downsides as a standalone work and as a work within a given gameplay style/franchise, and while this could be one of the occasions where we have different thoughts on concepts it does rather go against the narrative that "everybody" likes and praises it.

I might play it one day if I find it for a couple of quid in a charity shop/car boot but I am not in a great hurry to. Every time I try to engage with the bioshock franchise it seems generally playable but watered down compared to what came before.

I've played and finished Bioshock maybe three times. Strangely it is not a game I regard very highly so I believe I played it that many just to see if I actually could get the hype and see if I could follow the main plot. Looking back I can appreciate the atmosphere, but the fetch quests and the one-last-thing syndromes were very unnecessary.

Still, I've been curious to try out System Shock 2, mostly for its coop feature. Hopefully a remake comes out eventually.

I’ll stay cautiously optimistic as long as there’s not too much meddling from 2K’s executives. They definitely love their live services and microtransactions, but I’m hoping they see the value in BioShock’s reputation and give them the Rockstar treatment where they’re allowed to build a great single player game as long as there’s also a money-generating live service in there too. (I guess that’s kind of like BioShock 2’s crammed-in multiplayer too, except for the part about the single player being good.) It also might be pointless to speculate, because who knows where 2K will be in a few years.

All that being said, Firaxis is a great studio and I inherently trust any of their alumni until I’m given a reason not to. There’s a new interview with her on GamesRadar too where she mentions some of the key people they’ve secured from the original BioShock team, namely the Creative Director, Art Director and Design Director, so I’m inclined to think the game is in good hands for now.

Still, I've been curious to try out System Shock 2, mostly for its coop feature. Hopefully a remake comes out eventually.

There’s an enhanced edition coming out sometime soon. That’s probably the closest we’ll get for a while.

Yes. That's why everyone praises it. You're linear and boring.

Ofc, because every review that gives good score was buyed... Antivaxers say similar things - if study is not in accordance to their point of view, it must be bought by Big Pharma. :D

Go read metacritic user reviews 8.5 overall you mention nothing about the combat which is what makes the game special along with the setting

Big fan of the BioShock series but Bioshock 1 & 2 were far superior to Infinite. Infinite was quite dissapointing imo. Still had my fun with it though.

Hopefully the new one turns out really good.

2K, famous for microtransactions and live service games.
The person in charge of the studio has a major in marketing and that's what she's been doing for the majority of her career in gaming.

It's healthy to be sceptical but this makes me want to put on my foil hat

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
